I don't understand why non American's care so much. Hell we know shit about your governments, I doubt you know much about ours. Most American's (myself included) don't all the details about our own government. What percentage of voters can fully understand the candidate's tax plans? How many fully understand the economy and how it will be affected? The answer is not many.

So before everyone starts chiseling his face into Mt. Rushmore, how bout we take a look at his record. No matter how you swing it, its obvious that he still has a lot to prove. Time is going to be the judge of this election and it's painfully obvious that we are unsure of what we are going to be getting.
Bush's foreign policy amounted to a considerable violence committed upon a vast majority of the world. We have troops, our countries' sons and daughters, fighting your wars. How the hell could we not care? You don't know shit about or governments because we don't try to force it on you. The Bush administration did. We all had a vested interest in this.

not only do you not know shit about our governments but i could give 87% of americans a map of Scotland and ask them to point to Scotland and they'd still fuck it up. :)
oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.

Almost everything that has happened from 2001 onwards has proved that what happens in America directly affects the rest of us, whether we want it to or not. The current financial crisis is an example of this. The cliche is 'when America sneezes, the whole world catches a cold'. It's true. We watch with interest because we know OUR future is at stake too :)

We are poised ever closer to a world war, perhaps a nuclear war (Iraq is already read: Depleted Uranium), and you're wondering what exactly again?

I've heard this more than a few times now. People feel flattered and stunned that foreigners take an active interest in their war mongering country, that very same one is threatening the entire planet with military force, and playing havoc with the financial system read: federal reserve?

I don't know about anyone else, but this is one sentiment that truly puzzles me beyond belief.

over specific principles, goals, and policies.

i live in canada and a friend of mine texted me yesterday and said that she was so proud and also said that america needs obama right now. i won't admit that i really like Obama but you know what i think it is great that people feel this hope around the world.

i will say one thing the real winner in this election are the youth. i also thought that they would not really come out to vote but they did and that tells me that maybe not only america but teh world is going to get better.

finally, teh reason that non-americans care abotu american politics is that america is still the super power in teh world and they do effect the world. that and also it is entertaining. hell, canada had an election abotu 2 months ago and teh campaign started 4 months ago.

    You know why don't you?
I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because some people out there in our nation don't have maps.....
and then there's the whole other problem of the Iraq" and "Asian countries" and their need for the support of the American educational system in identifying the United States on the map.

    :D

My American friends and family love to tease me about being born in Australia, but they forget they have much i can tease them back about! :D It's all good fun though, I love it here and it is my home now.
  • Good job, America.

  • Like I said, most people don't understand their own governments, I doubt many foreigners grasp exactly how our election will affect them.

Think about how much coverage foreign elections are given here. The news may give brief coverage but not enough to fully understand what is going on. Obviously the people in that country would have a better understanding of the candidates and what is at stake. So no matter the outcome of their election, I wouldn't be in a position to judge their decision.

I'm not taking a dig at the OP but I just think its unfair that "the image of the US changed in a matter of seconds, had the outcome been any different we would have probably just given up and thought there was nothing left to believe in over there."
OKAYYYYYYYYYYYYY! :D this post alone sums up how little you know about the world. The US presidential election gets about the same, or more, coverage than our own.

I second the OP. The world's gonna be a friendlier place now. So congrats all... and thank you :)

Even if Obama isn't the perfect president (time will tell), the fact that he has been elected will give the world economy a new breath and this will help to improve the US' image outside its frontiers. After 8 years of Bush's presidency, I think many people were waiting for something else...
Agreed :) we've no idea what's to come over the next 4 years. We're congratulating the VOTERS for saying enough's enough and coming out in their droves to say NO to 4 more years and MAKING A CHANGE... so thank you thank you thank you. If Obama fucks it up, you don't deserve it. If you voted McCain and got the same crap you DO deserve it. It's a good day to be an American :) you've come so far since yesterday... it's fantastic :)

    Again, Congratulations!!!!

    i agree...and i am american.
i remember when bush got re-elected i was SO disillusioned and beyond disappointed with my country. i talked with many of my friends abroad, and then too.....they could NOT believe what occurred and it instantly tarnished their view of my country. i would not fault them for that, i felt the same. so yes, today is a GREAT day and i hope the rest of the world does see this for the POSITIVE act it is, and more to come!
