Darrent Williams killed
Broncos' cornerback shot in 2 a.m. drive-by
Posted: Monday January 1, 2007 9:42AM; Updated: Monday January 1, 2007 11:13AM

DENVER (AP) -- Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting early Monday, his limousine sprayed with bullets in downtown Denver just hours after the team was elimated from the NFL playoffs.

Team spokesman Jim Saccomano said police called him about 3 a.m. from the scene and told him three people had been shot, and the 24-year-old Williams had been killed.

A little after 2 a.m., a white Hummer limousine was fired on from a vehicle that pulled up along its side, police spokesman Sonny Jackson said.

Three people in the limo were hit and were taken to hospitals, where one man was pronounced dead, Jackson said. The other man and woman who were shot were not identified.

Jackson said police were searching for suspects and interviewing witnesses.

"We have no motive yet," Jackson said. "We're hoping to talk with witnesses to find out where they were coming from, and that might give us some clues."

Saccomano said he spoke with coach Mike Shanahan and others in the organization. Hours earlier, the Broncos lost to San Francisco 26-23 in overtime.

"Complete shock. We're speechless. It takes words away. A terrible tragedy," Saccomano said.

Pro Bowl player Champ Bailey was among the players and team staff members who gathered at Denver Health Medical Center, where Williams' body was taken.

"He had a big heart and a lot of courage," said Cedric Smith, assistant strength and conditioning coach. "It's a tragedy, a complete tragedy. It's sickening."

Williams teamed with Bailey to give Denver one of the top cornerback tandems in the NFL. Williams finished the season with 88 tackles, 78 of them solo, and four interceptions.

Players and coaches are off Monday. They were scheduled to meet Tuesday before heading home for the offseason.

On Sunday against the 49ers, Williams had three tackles and returned two punts for 50 yards before leaving the game with a shoulder injury late in the second half. After the game he said he was planning to wait a few weeks before determining if he needed an operation.

In December, Williams spoke of his desire to return to his hometown of Fort Worth, Texas, this offseason to talk to kids about staying out of gangs.

Williams, a second-round draft pick out of Oklahoma State in 2005, made an immediate impact on the Broncos. He started nine times in his rookie season following a stellar college career.

The white stretch Hummer limousine sat in a snowbank beside Speer Boulevard, a main street through downtown Denver. On the driver's side, at least three bullet holes were visible near the front, and four more near the back.

Police and evidence technicians worked amid snow and ice from recent storms, using small tent-like yellow plastic markers to indicate possible pieces of evidence.

I'm in no position to speculate but I highly doubt the shooter was an angry fan.

You're probably right. But that was the first thing that came to mind when I saw the headline.

  • I wonder if this part of the article is of any implied relevance to what happened:

"In December, Williams spoke of his desire to return to his hometown of Fort Worth, Texas, this offseason to talk to kids about staying out of gangs."

Whatever the case, it's sad news.

Hi, Miller! No one knows the details of this case, and everyone's just letting their imaginations run away with them. That's the deal. ;)

More details are starting to emerge. This from the PFT website:

WILLIAMS DIED IN JAVON WALKER'S LAP

A league source tells us that the current talk in team circles is that Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams expired in the lap of receiver Javon Walker after being shot early Monday morning in a limousine.

Williams, we're told, expired instantly. Also in the limousine were linebacker D.J. Williams and receiver Brandon Marshall. Two others who were riding in the vehicle with the Broncos players were shot, but Walker, D.J. Williams, and Marshall were not injured.

Initially, it was feared that Walker also had been shot, but it was determined that the blood on his clothing was from Williams. (We really couldn't think of a more delicate way to report that specific fact, and we continue to feel nauseous about the entire ordeal. We've heard good things about Darrent Williams from members of the media, and our thoughts are with his family.)

We're told that local police have strong leads as to the suspects, and that arrests are expected to come sooner rather than later. Apparently, the bullets were fired by a group of men with whom the Broncos players had squabbled at a New Year's Eve party hosted by one or more members of the Denver Nuggets.

  • this is a bad situation and a terrible day for the broncos organization but maybe i shouldnt be saying this but im getting alittle sick of these people just randomly "getting" shot and then us having to hear how they had nothing to do with anything and were such a good person....for the most part you dont just get shot, you usually put yourself in a situation to be shot

Would you say the same exact thing if the player who got shot was white? By all accounts Darrent Williams was a stand up kid with good character. How do you know he was even the one the shooters were after. It could be possible he was an innocent bystander.

I'm still in shock that the Chiefs made it...I think it's a sign..to win against Jacksonville AND have all 3 games go the way we needed it to.

As for the topic at hand, it is a tragedy and my thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.

  • For my 1000 post this had to be it? This sucks and I am really shocked. Darrent Williams graduated from Oklahoma State University, my alma matter and so I followed him for at least four years or so. I don't know of any personal issues or if he had ties to gangs, so I can't comment. It could have been a freak deal, or maybe not. I am not jumping to conclusions, but the article did say he was wanting to go back to Ft Worth to talk to kids about gangs, so it sounds like he was against gangs. Just a tragic thing.

That's a borderline racist comment. Just because someone is leaving a party in a limo makes them a hoodlum? If I was rich, I'd leave a party in a limo instead of a taxi.

If that limo would've had Jay Cutler, Jake Plummer, & Jason Elam in it would you have still made that same comment?
