but you know OLS last time i doubt mankind had anything to do with it. twas just a cycle earth was going through. we are freaking this time cause we fuck with the earth and dont know how to live with her. nature does her thing and mankind just cant deal witrh it.
wake up cate. i need you to tell me how one can deny something they can see with their own eyes. like the islands off new guinea being evacuated due to rising waters.
my post above explains mans contributions. if man had nothing to do with it and it's simply one of earths natural cycle; give your heart to God because your arse is gone. from ice core and coral core samples; along with archeology; our current symptoms can be seen several times in history; just before a mass extinction. the last time this happened the ice cover melted within a decade. the methane produced by decaying matter rose the temperature even more. core samples drilled from the ocean floor in the artic circle contained ferns and other evidence that the artic was a tropics.
last time the earth wasn't covered with chemicals but there are a few places that man hasn't touched yet. people are moving more towards organic foods but these are the people trying to make a difference. and i must say there's way too few.
my climate model shows the earth will heal itself. the extra weight from the meltwater will start volcanic activity and the dust will block the suns rays. and this will happen within our lifetimes. time will tell if i'm right. if this is one of earths cycles; we're already dead.
I agree. But the reason you (and I and most everyone) don't do a little more is the same reason some people give for not voting--"I'm just one person. One person makes no difference."
Not true for me though. I do quite a bit already, and do not think that one person makes no difference. But I just recently got back to using re-usable shopping bags - I used to, then got away from it, and recently made up my mind to do it. Stores are helping by having re-usable bags available for 99 cents each. Just an example. I can drive a hybrid when I can afford to buy one next time I need a vehicle. I'm sure we can all think of something else to add.
Also I believe calling the problem climate change is more accurate than simply warming. There are parts of the planet that get just as cold, but at slightly different times. Winter seems to be shifting up here, and staying later in the new year, which makes a difference for crops and animals.

pfft al, can you not tell when im being facetious? thats why i use the big big smilie face. <---- see he's funny, so he surely cant be serious. nor am i when i use his happiness.
i am well aware some things can not be denied when there is overwhelming evidence to support something.
are you aware of just how close to sea level those pacific islands are? a whale farting could put them underwater, not to mention a king tide. besides i'm not denying sea levels are rising. my parents live on an island in the pacific, so i do have a vested interest in the level of the sea. and before you ask, no ive not noticed an increase in sea level in regards to where my parents live. which gives me pause when other islands go under. makes me think what other factores are involved or do we simply put these islands' 'destruction' down to just rising sea levels?
i said last time it happened, i doubted mankind had much of an affect on global warming, or whatever the hell you want to call it. i say this knowing the huge progress mankind has made in the past 55m years and how when we look at what industrialisation has done to the planet we can see how detrimental we have been to the health of Earth. the technology wasnt around last time therefore tis evident(at least to me) just how much an effect mankind didnt have back then in comparison to now. so what the hell are you talking about?
hear my name

thank you cate. i feel like you let me into your mind and i understand now. maybe i'm a wee bit slow. the islands off new guinea are just over a meter above sea level. here in the states; we don't notice the rise in sea level because of erosion. we only notice it when houses fall into the ocean or when someone is selling land and the survey comes up short. since our beaches are public; that rarely happens.
what i'd like to use as an example is ice core samples taken in the early 70's. they showed very high levels of lead. shortly after lead was banned in petrol; the levels dropped to pre automobile levels. this shows me the effect man can have on the earth without even knowing it.
the earth has had to deal with global warming (i hate that title too) several times in the past. each ended in disaster. like i've said; the time for pointing fingers ended years ago. all we can do now is prepare.
thank you for the well thought out reply.

this is where people get confused. the warming is in the oceans. when the poles get too warm; the water in the oceans don't "circulate" as they should. warm oxegen enriched water is drawn to the poles which then sinks and is drawn back to the equator. if we lose this process; the oceans become stagnent and everything dies. the warming is seen in the corals. corals are dying and growth rings show the warming almost like growth rings on a tree. the corals that are dying are dying because the water is rising and the sun can't reach the dept the corals are now in. corals depend on sun to survive. just go into a pet shop with a coral tank and you will see the light needed. the deeper the tank; the more intense the light needs to be. you will also see chillers which are like aircon units for water. corals cannot live above 70*F.
for now; places will get colder. melting ice gives off cold air and the winds move that air around the globe. as the air gets closer to the equator; it warms.
i think the proper wording should be global disaster.
people are going to do something about global warming.....they're going to die. 2/3 of the earths population will die because of global warming.
As I mentioned, I am going to suggest building a big boat and getting two of everything on board and then riding the swells until the little bird comes back with a branch in it's beak to allow me and my unwilling captives to get back on the land.
Now if I can just figure out how much food to take or have one of these gods let me know then I figure I've got it all figured out.
Care to join my cult or religion.
Before you get too carried away, yes I realize that when the ice melts that the ground will disappear and life as we know it will start to drown.
I think I will have my Iron Maiden blasting from the speakers as my boat with two of all life forms aboard sails into the setting sun.............run to the hills

i found a place in the mountains with plenty of clean water and i'm self sufficient. unless the waters reach 5200 feet ASL i'll be fine. i have angora goats and llamas which produce wool for clothing; a greenhouse which produces the food i eat; and plenty of buffalo; deer; elk; grouse; and several other animals to eat. my 2 fishing ponds are full of trout which feeds my craving for seafood. my valley is miles wide and miles long.
i can't think of anything else i need.

Mabye a friend from Canada?
Sounds like a sweet place regardless of a rising water level or not.
Sounds like a sweet place regardless of a rising water level or not.
that's how i see it. as a little kid we only had 3 channels on the tele and most of the shows were westerns. so i naturally dreamed of having a ranch out west in the mountains. if i'm wrong about global warming; i still have my meat sales. so i figure i win either way.
as soon as i'm done rebuilding the stagecoach stop and open to the public; i'd love to have a friend from canada come visit.
I'm with you OLS, and Evenflow. Can I come live with you two?
Coasts are beginning to disappear now. It may be only happening at such a small level that the eye doesn't notice it, but they are. Pay attention to where the levels are at now, and come back in 5 years time and see where they are then. Predictions of sea levels are due to rise dramatically in the next 5 to 10 years. Regardless of what people want to think, global warming and exhaustion of natural resources will be the contributing causes of the end of our civilization. Why people aren't thinking about their children's world when they grow up and helping the Earth while we can, escapes me. People are in denial to think that we're going outlive everything. The only thing that will outlive us is the mountains of plastic surrounding the globe 5 times over.

you touched on what hurts me the most. i have grandchildren and i want the best for them. i want them to experience the world that i got to see. i want them to climb a mountain and see for hundreds of miles. when i was young and fished canada; all i could think of is bringing my children and grandchildren there. i wanted them to experience landing a 25 lb muskie. i wanted to teach them to survive in the wilderness and respect the earth. now i see the earth and know this is what they will inherit.
we don't notice the rising waters because of erosion. it makes the beaches look normal. we only notice when houses fall into the ocean. my parents have a condo on the ocean in ft lauderdale and i remember a call i got from them. they went to walk on the beach and the water was up to the stairs.
i haven't read the time article yet but i hope to. i want to see what they have to say. the ice the scientists predicted to be melted by 2050 is already melted.
It should be a government responsibility, through laws and education. They have the responsibility of protecting us, even if it means limiting personal liberties.
for example
- they have laws to ensure we don't drink and drive as that may hurt us or other drivers.

yet about 40,000 people die as a direct result of drunk drivers each year. we can't keep passing our responsabilities off on someone else. look at the uproar about the patriot act. it was meant to protect us and it did. hundreds of criminals were caught for bank fraud. i know this personally because i was dating someone that worked at the biggest bank in the us. we have laws for littering yet people still litter. where i live; wildfires are our biggest fear; yet drivers still throw cigarettes out their windows and start fires.
we have to use common sense and take responsability for our actions. why do we NEED a law saying littering is wrong? isn't it common sense? do you like when someone throws garbage out their car window in front of your house? WE must take the responsability. the sad bit is that it's our children that will suffer. all because we didn't care enough about the world we leave them.
