BEIRUT, Lebanon (CNN) -- Lebanese army troops fired Wednesday on Israeli troops hunting for explosives along the Israel-Lebanon border, Lebanese army and Israeli military sources said.

A U.N. official confirmed the exchange Thursday.

"In a serious incident last night, the Lebanese army and IDF (Israel Defense Forces) exchanged fire across the Blue Line in the area of Maroun a-Rus," said U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) spokesman Milos Strugar.

"The exchange was initiated by the Lebanese army after an IDF bulldozer crossed the technical fence in an apparent attempt to clear the area between the technical fence and the Blue Line of mines."

In their account of the incident, Israeli military sources said their troops were at the border near Avivim when the Lebanese troops fired into the air.

The Israelis warned them to stop, but the Lebanese forces fired at the Israelis, the military sources said. The Israelis responded with "accurate fire" and warned them again to stop.

The Israelis had no information about casualties.

Lebanese army sources said their troops fired at an Israeli bulldozer that had crossed the Blue Line into Lebanese territory in Maroun a-Rus about 10:30 p.m. There was an exchange of fire, they said, but there were no casualties on the Lebanese side.

The situation on the border is "very tense," the Lebanese sources said.

No better way to fight against Iran then to not have to go to Iran. If ya know what I mean.

Phew, thank the heavens above that the Lebanese army didn't use helicopters to stop the bulldozing.

well it's simple and written in the article, because foreign troops were crossing the "Blue Line" (you can add suspense music here)

did the israelis inform the lebanese beforehand of their intentions to 'cross the blue line' to hunt for explosives. or did they just assume the lebanese would know what they were doing?

UNIFIL confirms Israel's version: IDF troops didn't enter Lebanon

By Amos Harel, Avi Issacharoff and Aluf Benn, Haaretz Correspondents, Haaretz Service and Agencies

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) accepted on Thursday Israel's version of the events that concluded in an exchange of fire between the Israel Defense Forces and the Lebanese Army at the border late Wednesday.

UNIFIL patrolled the area around Israel's and Lebanon's shared border, photographed the site, and concluded that IDF troops operated entirely within Israeli territory.

The Lebanese Army on Wednesday fired warning shots at IDF troops, claiming that the troops had entered Lebanese territory.

The incident occurred north of the border fence that Israel erected several dozen meters within Israeli territory, but south of the actual international border between the two countries.

On Wednesday night, an IDF tank fired two rounds at Lebanese Army positions opposite Moshav Avivim, after Lebanese troops fired on IDF soldiers searching for Hezbollah mines beyond the border fence but inside Israeli territory.

Liam McDowell, a spokesman for the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), said the exchange was initiated by the Lebanese army and that the IDF bulldozer had crossed the border fence, but not the Blue Line, to clear mines.

I can't believe that with all the zionist control over media outlets such as CNN, that they would leave out these facts. By leaving out these new developments, the CNN report would leave some to believe (as is made obvious by some other comments on this thread) that Israel provoked the Lebanese by entering Lebanon, when in fact that is not the case.

The fact that CNN still hasn't updated its report to reflect the reality of what happened, more than 12 hours after UNIFIL clearing the IDF of any wrongdoing, might strike some as being indicative of an anti-israel slant in reporting.

here's an idea. why not get the united nations' troops in there to clear up the mines? that way, and i might be a little naive here, there will be no excuse for anyone to fire upon anyone else. just a crazy thought i had. :)

i'm even more naive than you, i guess. i thought it was reasonable to expect Lebanese soldiers to know where their own border is.

or maybe the reason they didn't know that the blue line is way out in front of israel's border fence, is because for the past 6.5 years they ignored a BINDING UN resolution that ORDERED them to replace Hezbollah in Southern Lebanon.

I guess the Lebanese army is still new to the area.

Why the haste Cate? Sit back, take a breath. What we need here is a resolution.

is that a UN resolution or a real and binding progression from discord to concord?

Well... The UN has clearly set a standard that no less than 15 resolutions must be broken and/or ignored before any action may be taken. At said point, the UN must declare that, "the United States must not stand idly by." Then, we roll the dice. 7's we go in and any other result from rolling the di we then turn back to UN in hopes of formulating another resolution. If at any point we cross the line of testicular fortitude we must then wait for international judgement. If setforth judgement is resoundingly negative please start again at the beginning of this paragraph.

It's clear we're in for a long, long affair. A lot of people are going to die in the meantime; that's for sure. But we must be accepted as a nation emotionally and/or shoved into conflict so as to get this right.

I believe simply declaring peace is a much better and safer option.

Now that is an idea I can really get behind! UN troops to clear minefields...That is sheer genius. Lets deputize Kofi Annan and have him lead the team!

what can i say, there is a fine line between genius and madness. :D:D

i don't know why the head UN guy doesn't get his hands dirty more. what's the point of him? besides looking like he's doing something when he's not.

Well said my dear. Lets turn Kofi Annan into a personal minefield clearer. Or better yet, lets send European troops to do the job. After all, its largely their countries who are the most vociferously opposed to Israel. Why dont they put their money where their mouth is? What ever happened to all those French troops that were supposed to man the Lebaneese border? They buggered off? Go figure? The French, run? No.....
