"It might have been only a straw in the wind, but The New York Times reported last week that, in his first 100 days, Barack Obama is planning to deliver a major foreign policy speech from an Islamic capital, most likely Cairo."

this is actually kinda of hopeful. It doesn't seem like he would announce continued support and allow carte blanch for Israel from a major Arab capital. This sounds like something that could have a very positive impact .

  • It would be great to see another 200k person gathering a la Berlin, but security would be a total nightmare.

It would be safest to deliver the speech underground or in the middle of the desert.
The less you know, the more you believe.

true. I just can't imagine Obama going into an Arab country to express his continued support for Israel's occupation. Probably wrong but eh, I can hope.

What's Arabic for 'Hope' and 'change'?

Perhaps he will also be able to con the Arabs like he did the Americans....

well, he hasn't actually done anything yet, policy-wise. I agree, it doesn't look good, given his appointments, but I'm still giving him the benefit of the doubt. don't ask me why.

I'm sure a lot of people will be concerned about his safety. I don't even think he should do it...actions, not words. Why risk it for some bs speech? show us something....

and don't put your ass on the line in an Islamic country, the ramifications if something were to go wrong are fucking grave.

Well, if he doesn't announce his continued support for Israel, the Israelis will be mighty pissed. He promised them first that Israel's safety goes above anything else, that they are friends (a feeling he has in his heart), that Israel has unbreakable bond with the States and he wants to strengthen it...

you mean the fear (beer?) campaign between periods of hockey? That's the only tv I watch. I just think it's pointless to go. why bother? If it's lip service, people will see thru it. we'll see what he does before he goes wherever, but I 'hope' he does 'change' some things before he goes.
I do worry about the guy tho, I don't think anyone would say they don't...

What they will have to do is stack the audience and hand out the usual change and yes we can posters. 2 dolla if you keep holding bam bam sign, $2.50 if you wave it around and scream yes we can. Who wants uncle sam greenback eh eh?

Step right up...get your posters heeere :D

Hope = Amal (I dont think that would work out too well considering one of the leading Lebanese Shi'ite militias/political parties goes by the name AMAL.

Change can be translated to taghayyur or mukhtalif.. they can work well in a phrase but not by themselves..

Taghayyur yumkinnuna an nu'min bi = Change we can believe in

I like it. I really can't remember the last a President spoke in an Arab country we hadn't invaded. It might seem like a silly gesture, but gestures are part of diplomacy. Can't remember where I read it, but I think I saw that he was thinking of Malaysia.
