The problem is keeping in pressurized, like you see in the vehicles that run on LNG. All it takes is a very small leak in the system and an inconvenient spark.....BOOM!!!
Both will explode under the right conditions, the pressurized gas is far more combustible than gasoline.
All the world will be your enemy, Prince with a thousand enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you, digger, listener, runner, prince with the swift warning. Be cunning and full of tricks and your people shall never be destroyed.

True but gasoline is still quite volatile and it was a tough sell originally getting these on the road too.
and Natural Gas dissapates quite quickly think of the number of natural gas leaks that occur daily in just the US that don't make the news... you've probably heard of virtually every major petrolium leak. Any kind of contained potential energy could be a potential problem... Imagine sitting in the Tesla super car on top of giant Lithium Ion batteries.... you can get a pretty nasty fire from that too. Even Compressed Air cars are dangerous.
Any new technology is going to have problems. I think this is do able definately but I do wonder the issues like you have brought up and the new ones to come (like refuling) that are slightly under the radar. Even things like... what could this do to various water tables... where do pollutants in the water go etc. How are they lubricated...
My Girlfriend said to me..."How many guitars do you need?" and I replied...."How many pairs of shoes do you need?" She got really quiet.
"They" are waiting for more quarters where "they" generate 40 BILLION dollar profits.
Besides aren't we going to run out of water too anyway. Where the hell is California going to get water to fuel cars?
We certainly need an alternative to gas (and not just because of the prices but because it's killing us all anyway with the emissions) but I prefer having water around to drink.
I don't know the answer but encouraging people to ride bikes and take PT is a good start. We should pay people not to drive cars
i did all the math and realized that it is now cheaper for me to take the train to work. so i went from driving 600 miles/week to about 50 miles/week~
and to all those saying where will all that water come from? well duh! from the melting glaciers and ice in Antarctica and Greenland! we need to stop the rise of the ocean levels!
also, in australia they are building the largest water desalination plant. not sure if its done yet as the show was a few years old. even if water was a temporary energy source until some other energy was found, it's probably better than oil.
