'Hot fuel' is hot topic this summer

WASHINGTON, June 9 (UPI) -- U.S. drivers could pay an extra $1.5 billion more for gas in summer because of the fuel's tendency to expand in warmer weather, it was reported Saturday.

People are paying for gasoline they're not getting, said Rep. Dennis J. Kucinich, D-Ohio, who conducted a congressional hearing on the issue Friday.

Lawmakers and consumer groups accuse oil companies and gas station owners of cheating customers by not dropping the price of gasoline during warmer temperatures.

Consumer groups, truckers and others want gas stations to install devices that would end the inequity of hot fuel by automatically adjusting volume according to the temperature at the pump.

You're not getting a real gallon when it's hot, said John Telles, a Pinole, Calif., trucker who has joined one of several lawsuits filed against fuel retailers over hot fuel prices.

like, duh. anybody with even a basic scientific knowledge knows that. Should we also complain when the exact opposite happens during Winter???

Yeah, point being...they shouldn't charge the same price for less, especially when it's so high like it is now.

  • Yeah, point being...they shouldn't charge the same price for less, especially when it's so high like it is now.

the point was to say, unsuccinctly, that lowering the price to match conditions would lead to the necessity to raise the price to match conditions...so, by this logic...maintaining the price throughout is the best way to go because it balances out in the end.

so you don't think this is needed?

"Consumer groups, truckers and others want gas stations to install devices that would end the inequity of hot fuel by automatically adjusting volume according to the temperature at the pump."

it automatically edjusts the volume, no raising or owering prices, just accurate measurement

I agree that eventually it balances it out, and who would pay for the devices? Gas stations my raise their prices slightly.

you have to consider what is reasonable. like i said, it balances out in places that have a seasonal climate.

instead of talking about this why don't we talk about WHY we are still using GASOLINE to power our cars!?!

someone sure woke up on the wrong side of the bed today, eh?

    why?

why are you wasting your time here eagerly following threads that are 'illogical' wastes of time?

    you asked:
"instead of talking about this why don't we talk about WHY we are still using GASOLINE to power our cars!?!"

and i showed you where it was...if you meant in an overall sense then some candidates are talking about that

the point is the consumer is paying for gas by the gallon ... i'm pretty sure in winter they are not getting more than a gallon per fill ...

In the winter the gasoline is more dense so you are getting more for your dollar. In the end it's probably a wash in areas that have all 4 seasons.

if the consumer is getting more in the winter then i can see it being ok but i am more then suspect to believe that isn't the case ...

They basically are... the colder it is, the more dense gas is, so you get more for the volume of a gallon. In the summer, you get less. Either way, you are still getting a gallon of liquid out of the pump, it's just that colder gasoline will have "fuel" in it than warmer.

If you live in the south then you are basically getting the shaft though.

    winter months..

transportation idles for many many minutes to warm up the motor
and heat the inside of the vehicale burning up fuel, going zero miles.

drivin in the snow all plowing thru snow can't be good mileage.

    summer months..

lotsa ppl travel burning up fuel.
recreational toys with motors, boats, 4-wheelers, ect.

their is a difference in a U.S. gallon and an Imperial gallon.
    Imperial gallon = 4.546 liters.
    Standard U.S. gallon = 4 quarts.
    1 liter = 0.88 quarts.
    U.S. gallon = 3.52 liters.

i hope my math skills are correct or else I am a tool.
i personaly wont loose sleep over hot or cold gas.
it all sucks, hot or cold fuel.
