State and federal authorities have converged on the home of a New Hampshire couple involved in a tax standoff.

People are being kept several miles away from the Center of Town Road in Plainfield, where Ed and Elaine Brown live. Neighbors, including some who have been evacuated, reported police SWAT teams, a helicopter and at least one armored vehicle converged on a field near the home Thursday morning.

Authorities have not said if they were moving in to arrest the fugitives

The Browns have been barricaded inside their home for several months, after being convicted of tax evasion. They did not even attend their sentencing hearing, in which they were sentenced to five years in prison. The couple has not paid their taxes in more than a decade and owe nearly a quarter of a million dollars in back taxes.

Elaine Brown once had her own dentist office in Lebanon.

Ed Brown says he is armed and has promised a Waco like ending, saying he will not be taken alive.

I hope this won't have a Waco ending. I wish the guy luck. I love the sign he hung in his tree.

Even though I don't agree, per se. I wish these two luck and my heart goes out to them. I completely understand how hard it is to stand up for your principles in our system. It can make you feels so tiny and helpless at times...and other times it's feels so bold and true to just take that stand, win or lose.

We need more people like this in America in order for real change to occur.

Must be time consuming. Is this why farfromglorified hasn't been posting lately?

I thought about cracking that joke, too. :)

What part of their actions do you wish to see people emulating?
    1. Not paying taxes - gee, if we all did that the odds of having universal health care sure go down,
    2. Getting in armed standoffs with authorities - what a waste of my tax dollars and it's just more money that can't be spent on people in need,
    3. Being a danger to the public to such an extent that neighbours need to be evacuated - this level of care and compassion for others is not needed.

Basically these people are completely and utterly self-centered, without a care for society. I applaud anyone who has beliefs and lives by them, but please don't be so chicken shit that you can't peacefully face the consequences of your actions.

Yeah, I'm with you there. I wouldn't resort to violence and the use of guns, either.

He would be posting a hell lot more if he was barricaded inside his house. He's probably out buying wood, nails, a hammer and a life time's supply of food.

Then let's hope you are not a supporter of programs such as; education, welfare, medicare. These are all funded by tax dollars. Not providing these will just help to ensure that the rich stay rich, but maybe that's what you really admire.

I'm not a supporter of a large Federal government creating programs it has no business adminstering, and growing itself to unmanageable proportions. I'm not a fan of our government's role as the world police force, and the cost that entails. I'm a supporter of a government that is smaller, spends less, and therefore taxes less. I'm a supporter of anyone who protests our runaway taxation for whatever reason (anti-war, anti-social spending, anti-Federal, etc...)

I don't support federal education programs. I also don't suppoprt an over bloated welfare and medicare program that is run with unbelievable ineptitude by our federal government. I don't agree with manditory taxation but due support voluntary taxation such as the Fair Tax plan.

I have nothing against programs to assist the under-priviledged I just don't want the federal government involved in it. If we took the money the fedral government takes from each of our paychecks and instead donated it to charitable organizations the funds would be better managed and I wouldn't have to worry about my tax dollars going to fund a bullshit war or some useless billion dollar bridge in Alaska.

So you are against paying federal taxes but gladly pay state taxes. I hope you stay off the interstate highways though because I'm quite sure that people in Alaska didn't want to pay for it.

Interstate highways are important to commerce and the economic well being of this country. I am against tax dollars being spent on pork barrell and ineptly mananged federal programs and over inflated defense budgets. I have nothing against state taxes because those funds go directly to the support of the state I live in. They go to the roads, infastructure, etc... of the state I reside in. That doesn't mean that my state's government doesn't need to trim a lot of fat. I don't believe, I will state it again since you seemed to miss it the first time I stated it, in the manditory taxation of the people. I support the Fair Tax proposal which is a voluntary tax. New Jersey, the state I live in, receives $.45 for every $1.00 in federal taxes we pay. 50% of my tax dollars go to benefit another state. Meanwhile this very state has dire needs that oit can not meet because of lack of funds.

More people should read up on Ron Paul, or Kucinich and Gravel. If they did they would see what a politician should be instead of the crap pushed down our throats.

For what it's worth, as much as I'm giving Ron Paul "the business" in the other thread, he looks like a saint compared to those other VERY scary delusional guys running that I witnessed in the Republican debate the other night. *quivers in fear just recalling that night and those scary men*

I couldn't figure out if they were deliberately fear-mongering in order to keep the masses in line, or if they were saying the fear-mongering stuff because they believed it. *quivers again* Did I mention how scared I was/am?? Guiliani, I've paid attention to him for awhile through speeches and stuff, and imo he's deliberately fear mongering, in order to "lead".

I am really frightened when I see the landscape of American politics. It just seems that every election the choices get worse and worse and with each passing administration this country moves further and further from the ideals on which it was based on. In my opinion time is running out for the American people to reign in our government. before we know it it will be too big for us to control, which it pretty much is, and it completely implodes.

I just can't stand Guiliani!!! He reminds me of one of those people who always come in a year or so late on trends. He's still acting like it's 2003. And yes, he wants to keep that mentality of 'be very afraid of the big bad boogey man' alive as long as he can so it will benefit his bid...him being this supposed 9/11 hero guy or something.

You are talking in terms of "big". I'm not sure if you mean also "too big for it's britches". Cause in the sense of "the pride cometh before the fall", I'm kinda with you on that. I agree with you so much about losing touch with those founding ideals. It's never too late to turn things around. Especially for some good ideals.
