Republicans and Democrats are two sides of the same soiled cloth... politicians. All they want is to keep their jobs... and as long as there are mindless voters who automatically check the (R) or (D) box... simply because there is an (R) or a (D) next to their name, nothing is going to change.

As long as a party only needs to get a plurality to win, we're only ever going to have two parties. The names "Republican" and "Democrat" don't mean anything, and we'd have the same problem if we replaced them with "Libertarian" and "Green." What we will never have, however, are Republicans, Democrats, Libertarians, and Greens all sharing in the same Congress under defined party goals. For that, we may need to switch to a parliamentary system. Or something else entirely.

Edit: My bad. Not parliamentary, but rather proportional representation.

Actually, we'd be able to haul the president's ass in front of the senate and take a formal vote of no confidence under a parlimentary system. That'd be neat to see.

agree with you on the first point, but STRONGLY disagree with you on the second....

Republicans and Democrats, ie elected officials don't give a damned about anything but their own power, re-election is their only goal.

but voters aren't the one's who are mindless...the key is voters vs. the electorate...half of the people don't know what's going on...you can't lump them in with voters...

as far as voters go...the majority of them are ideologues...right wing whack jobs like me...and bloggosphere kooks like many of my leftist friends here :) we aren't mindless...in fact, those people who are most ideological are the most informed...(as i side note, it's kind of noteworthy that both sides choose the most outrageous statements made by the most uniformed of the other side and project that as the mainstream (i.e. liberals hate america, conservatives love torture) so as to avoid substantive debate.) we have strong beliefs, but can only vote for the choices presented to us....and the one thing we can agree on...is that the choices we have suck.

well, it needs improvement, but no other civilization in the history of the planet has empowered the individual to the extent our system has...so i think the word "shit" is a little harsh.

so on a scale of one to ten, where one is fecal matter, 5 is doodie, and 10 is shit, how would you rank our electoral system?

    yeah, i'll choose 7, poop!

and why does our electoral system have to be measured with fecal matter? No matter what...it's still shit.

b/c democracy (representative republic, whatever) is the worst form of government, except all the others!

why i think shit is too powerful of a condemnation....ultimately, right now, as it stands here today, the status of the majority party has little bearing on how an individual chooses to pursue their (sorry...gonna go john locke on you) destiny. that's my point, no other political / economic system in the history of the world measures up to that...not to say there can't be, or should be, improvements, particularly with the corruption of the elites, regardless of party.

i think i just talked myself down to doodie :)

i know term limits isn't the long-term answer...but politics shouldn't be a career...i'm not sure how to change that.

Why do people always seem to sell themselves short? Even if this is the best system (highly debatable) out there...if it's not good, then why not try to come up with something new and better?

i'm not sure why people sell themselves short...human nature?

i don't have as much of a problem with our system as we do with the people in our system...i think we basically need some sort of incentive system in place that makes it unattractive for people to seek public office, yet have people capable of solving problems serving in government. it's not that we sell ourselves short...that's a hard problem to solve!
