racial profiling is just a term which seeks to legitimise racism

It's not fucking racism. Are they saying that white people are better than Asians, or Mexicans are better than Arab look people? No. Did your friends eventually get into the states? Yes. Oh, they had to wait 6 hours? boohoo. The US is still the leader in people of all ethnic backgrounds peacefully living together and being accepted. Look at France, the Muslims are setting fire to cars once a year.

it also doesnt help when passengers refuse to fly with dark skinned people. remember a few months back when mi5 and the police siad they foiled an aircraft bombing plot? well a few days after that people refused to fly on the plane because two asian guys "look suspicious". the pilot forced them off the plane even though spanish (it might have been in italy) police checked them and said they were fine to travel and that their luggage was clean. i hope those guys sued the airline. there really was no call for it.

Right, no passengers should be left off a plane because of what another passenger thinks.

of course it is racism. you are discriminating against someone and making subsequent judgements about them based on the colour of their skin. that should not be any measure of criteria for stopping and detaining people.

who cares if you are the leader of ethnic groups, that does not justify these actions at all, it only makes them more ludicrous.

hope the blinkers you are wearing aren't too uncomfortable.

what? i wanted you to be quiet, you seem to be rather foolish and come across as small minded, in my opinion. I'm pretty sure my statement conveyed all i wanted to say.

As for the scottish education system, what exactly are YOU trying to convey? Would you prefer me to perhaps communicate my feelings through poetry? perhaps a haiku? that may make it seem more intelligent, but it will nonetheless still carry the same sentiment.

Here is a lesson in common sense.

Police don't look for cars that are going the speed limit and driving straight when they are looking for drunk drivers. They look for cars that are speeding and driving erratically. It would be a waste of time and resources to pull over cars that have no sign of drunk driving just to be fair to all cars. And while the cop is pulling over someone who has little to no risk of driving drunk, it only allows more drunk drivers to get by.

And seriously, it is just a Customs post. It is an inconvenience only. Nothing more. If Americans were known for blowing up markets in Ireland, then I wouldn't be offended if I was stopped at an Irish airport for a few hours. Hell, I'd be worried if I weren't.

foolish b/c why? B/c i suggested that customs officials admitted people to the US who prob shouldn't have been admitted? If they would have done their jobs better we may have prevented something. Yes, that is ignorant and small minded...I am truly sorry. I couldn't help but notice that you didn't respond to my question / comment in the post but you were able to eek out "small minded fool".

yes, i want a haiku. Thanks for caring :)

i hope you understand I was mainly pissed off cos my friend felt really demeaned and was quite upset about it, I apologise for venting in your direction, but I dont agree to the "hmmm thats life" attitude, thats all

i can understand why people would be pissed off; esp if it happens routinely (hense the need for quick AND efficacious ways to screen people). My hmmm that's life attitude is prob born out of cynicism rather than anything. I wasn't trying to belittle the situation, but it's too bad we are forced to do these extensive checks and hold people up. I want to say there was a study put out a year or 2 ago that suggested the added security really didn't do that much overall...but i could just be making that up.

i'll let the haiku slide, as long as i can request one in the future.

  • if the american public were to be told that certain people would be detained and questioned due to certain blanket descriptive criteria that they filled, it would be an outrage and deemed unconstitutional. However, it seems if it's for the foreigners, it's ok then. Just a bit surprising seeing as America was built on fairness and aequality for all. And for some strange reason, this description never seems to involve white europeans. I think these rules worsens further the whole them vs us mentality that many people feel and it just frightens the lay public and instills in them a bias towards people who look a certain way. I mean, if the american customs can discriminate, so can the general public don't you think.

Um, we did that to the Japanese population in WWII. In fact, we put them in 'concentration camps'. Not like Nazi camps, but we literally 'concentrated' in holding pens so they couldn't 'betray' us. Look, we had 9/11. It was perpetrated by people of a certain description. People of the same physical description match that of 3 of the 10 most wanted people. Sorry, but there is going to be suspicion. And in this thing, if you make a mistake and miss one, you could have 100-10,000s deaths. Does it suck? yes. Is it fair? probably not. Am I glad that they are being this vigilant or overboard? As long as lives are saved. Also, if you don't like it, the best part of this country, you are welcome to leave...no questions asked.
  • yes, customns are crazy nowadays. i was amazed with the ease/freedom i traveled between countries that were all part of the EU. as an american citizen i didn't have any issues leaving/returning home...but definitely a LOT more involved...and yes, my lipstick was consificated. :p crazy times. i do not envy the customs officers, they are just following orders/doing their jobs...but absolutely...it's out of hand what is going on....and absolutely, the profiling is insane.

  • I've got dual citizenship becase I was born in America to Australian parents, and moved back to Australia when I was little.

Last time I entered the states I just flashed my US passport and sailed straight through. I was even carrying DNA samples, which I tried to declare. They didn't give a shit. Just waved me straight through. For they cared I could have brought a whole esky full of anthrax into the country.

Interestingly, when crossing the border between Israel and Egypt, I got a much less friendly response from the border official when I showed him my US passport. I was just trying to avoid getting any Israeli stamps on my Australian one. All the arabs we met hate america. I can't imagine why. . . After seeing his reaction I stopped using my US passport the rest of the time I was in arab countries. I just showed my Australian one instead, which seems to get a positive response everywhere. The problem is that I now have Israeli border crossing stamps on both passports, so I'll have to "lose" my australian one and get it replaced if I ever want to go to somewhere like Lebanon or Syria.

I tend to cast a jaundiced eye upon my beloved America these days. We have become SOOOO FRIGHTENED of the darkies wanting to Anthrax our peace-loving ways and freedoms that we are willing to freely surrender our own liberties granted to us by our founding fathers in the name of 'Please, don't hurt us... scary dark people from someplace else'.
But, we have our great protector... President America. With his swift sword of Vengence he will protect us by slashing down the terrorist along with our bullshit Constitution... what's the big deal, anyway? It's just a piece of paper. And we will continue to protect our land of the free by sealing our 2,000 mile southern border with a 700 mile fence. That should do the trick.
So, scary dark people... be put on notice... we will continue to suspect you all of wrong doing until you can prove your innocence.
    God Bless America.

I'm confused by your repeated use of the word 'we' in this post.

When any terrorist group begins adopting White Muslims then the U.S customs officials will be crapping themselves.

Hey maybe you bumped into my mates that drank their way across Germany last year.

Yeah Aussie backpackers are great if I do say so myself. We tend to travel solo or in small groups, rather than as big noisy obnoxious mobs like most of the seppos I ran into overseas. Of course there are exceptions. There's nothing like running into a fellow australian after months of only hearing foreign accents.
