"The song pairs music written by guitarist Stone Gossard with lyrics by lead singer Eddie Vedder. Bassist Jeff Ament does not appear on the track. Stone Gossard recorded the bass line for the track".

I did not know that! Did you?

Cool stuff about the video, too. :)

  • I didn't realise Jeff didn't play on the track; Stone played bass. Cool stuff about the video, too. :)

yeah I just followed the citation to that Jeff interview and he does indeed say that he doesn't play on it. I was not aware of that.

"For me, a couple of the songs I didn't play on at all-which are 'No Way' and 'Evolution'-are two of my favorite songs on this record. Three or four years ago, I don't know if I could have said that. I think I'd have been kind of bummed that I wasn't part of the song, or wasn't at least playing bass or doing something on the song. At that point, it seems like it's interesting to sit down and learn a bass line that Stone wrote. It's great to listen to something purely being a fan of the people I play with, to sit back and have a pure perspective and just say, 'Wow, that's a great song.' It's not because I played on it; there's nothing to do with my ego in this. It's just about listening to it as a song and as a fan. I think there's been a lot of growth in this record in that way-just giving up things to other people and letting other people do things."

I know...it's both rare and interesting when I learn facts I didn't know about Pearl Jam.

Jeez...thanks for pretty much monopolizing No Way Stone!

I know, and these are some things I only found out recently:

Jeff currently owns a small island on Flathead Lake, where he enjoys wakeboarding.

Damien Echols of the West memphis 3 co-wrote the lyrics to the song "Army Reserve", on Pearl Jam's self-titled album.

Mike McCready was born on April 5, the same date both Kurt Cobain and Layne Staley were said to have died.

I thought this was interesting what Jeff had to say about playing bass:

    In an interview, Ament stated:

“ I have to be able to feel the bass. I've worked hard with our producers to make sure that when you play our records on your stereo, you can feel the bass. You might not necessarily be able to hear it all the time, but if you turn it up you can feel the movement in the low end -- that it's moving the song. And when it's not there, it should be creating a dynamic.[2] ”

It really shows on Yield, which imo is their best produced album.

I really noticed this while listening to VS. on vinyl today, the bass really moves some air on there.

I wonder why Jeff didn't play bass on DTE. Don't you think that's odd?

Not saying todd mcfarlane isn't talented, but if you read it you will find out that there were many talented people involved in the making of the video. He wasn't even the sole director of the video. Kevin Altieri co-directed it and also co-wrote it, with input from Todd McFarlane and Eddie Vedder.
