STRATFORD, Conn. -- An off-duty police officer shot and wounded his 18-year-old daughter after he mistook her for an intruder in their Connecticut home.

Stratford police said Tasha Scott had apparently sneaked out to visit her boyfriend late Monday night and came back into the home through the basement.

Her father, 41-year-old Eric Scott, was awakened by motion sensor lights in his back yard and when he went to investigate found the basement door unlocked. He then saw someone in a basement bathroom and fired his service pistol, hitting his daughter in the knee. Her wounds are not considered life-threatening.

Her father called 911 when he realized who he had shot, police said.

Eric Scott has been on leave from his job since being struck by a truck while on duty in November.

No charges have been filed. Scott is with the New Haven Police Department.

What the fuck? No warning before the shot? Good thing he wasn't aiming for the head, huh? I believe that this dude was more interested in harming an intruder than protecting himself.

There's already a gun debate thread. I made it, so I know it's there.

    But a question:

Do you guys think he was protecting himself, or that he had been waiting for someone to make his day?

who knows. we dont know this guy. he may have had a bad day, he may have a crazy ex girlfriend that has been threatening him. or crazy ex friend or co worker. or whatever, we dont know. there are two sides to every story. we only know one.

So a bad day calls for shooting first? I can understand him calling for the intruder to stop or he's going to shoot, but to just go down there and right away shoot, there is no excuse. He's a cop for crying out loud. If anything, he was trained in talking down a person.

If this was an ordinary citizen my reaction would be that while I don't agree with shooting first and asking questions later, like jlew said, we don't know the situation and I would try to reserve judgment for the time being. But in this case being a trained police officer, it bothers me a bit. He of all people should know how to assess a threat in a situation and to not shoot first.

    Crappy cop.

You never, ever, Ever shoot at a target you do not see, i.e. shooting at someone through a door.

That's SWAT team tactics, as in the seige of SLA and the Patty Hearst kidnappers....

I think he was just exercising his right to shot an intruder, lucky for him he aimed at her knee.

Still hopefully he won't make that mistake again.

The economy has polarized to the point where the wealthiest 10% now own 85% of the nation’s wealth. Never before have the bottom 90% been so highly indebted, so dependent on the wealthy.
