What does this mean officially?

Do the Dems have the guts to create new legislation and force Bush to look and deal with it?

It means Viet Nam all over again. Grunts out there humping in the shitholes while politicians back in D.C., wearing designer suits dick around and around.
It reminds me of my friend who wanted to restore a rusted out Camaro and kept shoveling money into it. He'd bust off the rusted out motor mount trying to get the engine out and have to replace that... and the cross member... and the suspension... and the steering knuckles... and the...
It got to the point where he was better off cutting his losses and trying to sell off the replacement parts for what he could.
Moral? Some projects reach a point where you just have to scrap it. Iraq is basically my friend's Camaro.. only on a grand scale... and no one died trying to restore that Camaro.

Its not the Dems. That was a bill created and approved by the United States congress.

The thing about Iraq... yeah... it'll be a real mess when we leave. but, whose fault is that? Ours, that's who.
    Why?
Because who is in charge of the Command and Control? Who provides air support? Who supplies all of the logistics support? Who controls the airfields? Who controls the supply line? Who is providing the security trainning?
If you guessed US... give yourself a Gold Star.
    ...
The Iraqis part in their own security? Dudes that are doing it for pay... or payback... or both. Remember, these are the guys who either had the guns and hauled off unarmed civilians under Hussein... or the unarmed guys dragged out by Hussein's troops... and raised the white flag as soon as someone else pointed a gun in their direction.
The Shi'ites are looking for payback... and who blames them? I know if the Mormans dragged off my brothers in the night and I found their headless remains in a city dump 10 years later... and now I get the guns... some Mormans are gonna pay. We have trainned Death Squads over there. Guys with alligence to religious Sects, not one Nation under Allah.
That's all they've got over there. Re-trained Republican Guard or Fedayen Fighters in new uniforms or Shi'ia militiamen... no command... no control, when we leave. This is the course we set and the course we stayed. Now, it is extremely difficult to do anything other than just try to deal with it.

    Ok so,
    He vetoes to withdraw troops.

Hasn’t nearly every general strongly suggested to him to pull troops out?

What is he just blind or arrogant?

Or is it his alcoholic behavior? Even when you quit drinking those behaviors stay with you.

I’m going to go a step further and ask:
Has a president’s mental health ever been questioned?

I was going to make a comment but I think you said it better than I would have.

A point made, from The Guardian yesterday:

This is only the second time Bush has used his veto. The first was six months ago, to stop a bill on embryonic stem-cell research becoming law. The bill, he said, "would support the taking of innocent human life ... and crosses a moral boundary our decent society needs to respect". Would that he lavished so much care on human life that has evolved beyond a collection of cells. Would that his moral boundaries stretched beyond the green zone. Would that he had an opposition worthy of the name.

it means he didnt give a timetable on a pull out so we can try and at least get something done, if anything at all....but if we give a public timetable lets just go ahead and hand Iraq over to the insurgency----lets make it public so they can just plan more attacks as we are pulling out...very smart isnt it?

to be able to answer this question intelligently, and it means we (and our elected officials) need to find ways to push our misguided President into accepting realistic and AUDITED benchmarks on the progression of his war.

....that is just plain fucking scary.

  • This is scarier...

YOUR GOVERNMENT, on the basis of outrageous lies, is waging a murderous and utterly illegitimate war in Iraq, with other countries in their sights.

YOUR GOVERNMENT is openly torturing people, and justifying it.

YOUR GOVERNMENT puts people in jail on the merest suspicion, refusing them lawyers, and either holding them indefinitely or deporting them in the dead of night.

YOUR GOVERNMENT is moving each day closer to a theocracy, where a narrow and hateful brand of Christian fundamentalism will rule.

YOUR GOVERNMENT suppresses the science that doesn't fit its religious, political and economic agenda, forcing present and future generations to pay a terrible price.

YOUR GOVERNMENT is moving to deny women here, and all over the world, the right to birth control and abortion.

YOUR GOVERNMENT enforces a culture of greed, bigotry, intolerance and ignorance.

Here is what I don't get.... the time table in the legislation was non-binding... so essentially it meant nothing other than words on a piece of paper. If he really wanted the money, he could have signed the bill and blew off the whole timetable like he has blown off 90% of the advice he has gotten on Iraq.

It's obvious he doesn't care what the polls say or what people think of him, so what would it really hurt if he just ignored the time line? a few points on his approval rating? would anyone even notice that?

That's a good point but by signing it he is admitting defeat to the Democrats, in the Republicans eyes, and god forbid on party actually admits that the other is right.
