Lott: Bush barely mentioned Iraq in meeting with Senate Republicans
From CNN's Ted Barrett
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Bush barely mentioned the war in Iraq when he met with Republican senators behind closed doors in the Capitol Thursday morning and was not asked about the course of the war, Sen. Trent Lott, R-Mississippi, said.
"No, none of that," Lott told reporters after the session when asked if the Iraq war was discussed. "You're the only ones who obsess on that. We don't and the real people out in the real world don't for the most part."
Lott went on to say he has difficulty understanding the motivations behind the violence in Iraq.
"It's hard for Americans, all of us, including me, to understand what's wrong with these people," he said. "Why do they kill people of other religions because of religion? Why do they hate the Israeli's and despise their right to exist? Why do they hate each other? Why do Sunnis kill Shiites? How do they tell the difference? They all look the same to me."
I wasn't going to add any editorial comments, but I couldn't resist: I hope that every "real person in the real world" who lives in Mississippi and has lost a loved one in Iraq calls Senator Lott's office and tells him how much they "obsess" on the Iraq War.

"Of course it hurts. You're getting fucked by an elephant."

Edit: question mark
Ah, good old Macaca. In related news, Senator Allen is apparently part Jewish... and all racist!!!
Can I get a fuckin' rimshot on that one? Whooo!!
And Trent Lott is an ass. After hearing this, does anyone still believe he was "just being kind to an old man" when he said the country would have been better off if Strom Thurmond was elected president in 1948?
WTF is wrong with the right wing in the US, and why do they have this grotesque sense of entitlement about the world ?! Its astonishing.
No kidding, it was such a shame for him to lose the majority leader job after that.
Of course, this isn't the first time Senator Lott's demonstrated a bit of a disconnect from "real people in the real world". Back when the lobbying scandal broke, a few Democrats on the Hill suggested things like restricting lobbyists from buying lunch for members of congress and their staffs. Lott was one of the first to whine about it. He actually complained about having to buy his own goddamn lunch. You'd have to look for it, but I swear that one of his quotes was close to "This is a very expensive city to live in, where am I supposed to eat for less than $50???".
You need either huge balls of a complete lack of awareness to say something like that.
I wouldn't generalize like that...
A more fitting question would be: Why does the right wing hold THIS person up as one of it's bright political stars?
I don't think he has been held recently as a bright political star by the right.
An even better question is why does the left like to try to paint their opponents as racists nonstop while taking for granted all of those they supposedly care about?
That's true, but it's only because his big mouth cost him the Majority Leader job.
You can't deny that he is still considered one of the grand old men of the party...
If you look back, you will see that no one (well, that one guy) has said: LOTT IS A RACIST.
His statements are posted for what they are. The original post is a direct quote. No one changed it or altered it or added to it. It is what it is.
As for the joking, we're just being glib liberal elitists.
EDIT: And who is taking what for granted?
Dude, on a weekly basis i could provide you with an asinine statement like this from a Rep. or from someone else from the American right. There's no dearth of assholes coming from the right - on the contrary, if its not Trent Lott then its someone else.
My statement is not to suggest that all right-wingers/Rep's are of that ilk, b/c they certainly are not. In fact, real conservatives, the old-school conservatives, decry the current foreign policy of the U.S.. But the fact of the matter is that, on a completely disproportionate basis, it is those from the right making these dumbass statements and revealing their ignorance and inflated sense of self and nation.
He is one of 55 Republicans in the Senate. The left makes a much bigger deal of him than the right.
I thought that the original post bolding the passages "How do they tell the difference? They all look the same to me." was done solely to make him look like a racist. The first bolded phrase was definately ill advised in the wording although I think there was an underlying point to be made. The second was a malicious attempt to further play the race card.
The bolding was done to make him look like a racist? It's a direct quote,no? He made himself look like a racist. The original poster just bolded it for the skim-readers. Who was attempting to play the race card?
And what's the underlying point to be made in the first part? That the senate and the average person don't care about the war? He said it as if it's no big deal to anyone. The only people that I can see not caring about the war are the ones who support it without question. it's easy to ignore if you place blind faith in the people running the show. As soon as you start asking the 5 w's & how, you either start to see something's wrong and get involved, or ignore it instead of pointing the finger at yourself. I guess his point is that his party's base don't give a shit about anyone but themselves.
It's pretty easy to play the race card when certain Republicans keep dealing them out.
What exactly do you think he meant when he said "They all look the same to me?"
How about this: "Gosh, I don't understand why Catholics and Protestants spent so much time killing each other in Northern Ireland; they all look the same to me."
I honestly don't know if he's a racist, but he makes it pretty easy to paint a picture when he says unbelievably stupid stuff like that and when he says that we'd be better off as a nation if we'd elected a segregationist president in 1948.
The point of bolding the two passages was not to point out how racist he may or may not be. The point was to show how disengaged and disconnected he seems to be from both "real people" and from the issues in Iraq.
Then why was it only that line (which is often used in a whole different way) rather than the whole sentence where the context is easily understandable and not racist?
The point is that the conflict is not the only issue as it seems to be to many in the media and on this board. Anyone looking objectively at the issues for this election can see that. The conflict in Iraq is an issue, I will give you that. So is the failure of the Federal Department of Education, domestic government waste, etc...
Can you look at any two Iraqis and tell me which one is the Shiite and which one is the Sunni in every single instance (and no, they are not wearing signs).
No, but I sure as hell wouldn't brag about that fact, especially if I was a member of the US Senate who voted for the war.
It seems like he was trying to align himself with "real people" by pointing out the fact that he can't understand religious extremism. Guess what, I don't understand it that well, either, but I sure as hell don't think I deserve cool points for it. Taking pride in his inability or lack of desire to understand something is pretty fucking sad.
The issue is not how true the statement is, but the implied attitude. He is being not only ignorant and crude, but inflammatory as well. How do you think it wuold go over in the states if you made the same comment about blacks? I can't speak for everyone, but I think that would be offensive to most people of whatever race it was said about. From what I've read, Sunnis and Shiites kill each other by going after neighbourhoods dominated by the other group, and each other's religious institutions. There is no way to tell ANY religious group from another by looks, so it's just a fucking assinine thing to say....he played the race card with that statement, b/c it's long been a staple of racist jokes/cheapshots and wasp mentality.
and this may not be the only issue on the table, but it's the one that keeps the Republicans in power....I don't understand how Iraq/terror and the dems lack of action can be the biggest issue in America one minute, and downplayed the next. He never said anything about the other issues you mentioned...
But really, the second in particular is a terrible statement for anyone to say. It is racist. Its not the bolding of it that makes him look racist, but the words he chose to say.

I don't hate anyone.
I'm more of a hate...stylist.
Still it's quite baffling to think about, why is DC full of this type of dumbassery?
The problem comes in where he over simplifies the situation and pretty much just makes lights of it. Thousands of people are dying and he makes a crack about how can they tell each other apart in the first place. It doesn't seem like an insightful, thoughtout response on the conflict to me but thinking things out and reading up on them seems be the last things on the minds of our government these days.
