This being Michael Moore, he is overstating everything of course. Such as our environmental record isn't THAT good, seeing as we produce heaps of oil. And that prison isn't representational for the system as a whole.
Anyway, I found it amusing, being a norwegian myself.
Peace

Time to start learning some Norwegian.
and reveling in it's loyalty. It's made by forming coalitions
over specific principles, goals, and policies.

I've got family in Oslo so I'll definitely be there. They have a summer hut on one of the islands (forget which one) which is amazing so hopefully I'll get there too.
I've got family in Ireland and Germany as well, so I don't know how much time I'll get in Norway. I would love to take the train from Oslo to Bergen as I hear that is beautiful. Otherwise I'm not sure. Any suggestions?

The trainride is nice, actually. Takes a good 7 hours each way though, but nice scenery going through the mountains. (I've taken it many times, since it's one of the cheaper ways to travel from Bergen to Oslo) And Bergen IS beautiful. Which is why I love it here. Situated in between the mountains and the sea. Taking a ride up the tallest mountain Ulriken on a clear day in the gondol lift is also highly recommended. Bergen is generally good for scenery, if you're into that. You can also buy insanely pricy sweaters and troll figures as well.

Sign me up! Haha. I will definitely try to get to Bergen as well then.

Joke aside, I really liked Inge Loenning's comparison about Norwegian conservatives and Us liberals.
NOrway is really nice country but unfortunately it is too expensive for me
But yeah, even norwegian conservatives are fans of the welfare state, only they want to save a little bit money for a little bit tax-cut. And throw around the efficiency word more often, and are generally more favourable to playing the game of war on terror (meaning keeping our 400 soldiers in afghanistan).

The best part I like was the outrageous smoking ban. I understand the idea behind not allowing to smoke in public spaces but the hotel I stayed didn't have even any smoking rooms!! I really suffered there because of this.
Couldn't you go outside the front of the hotel or something? That's what norwegians would do.

It is indeed very expensive though... I thought Ireland was expensive  . When you start thinking 7euro is a cheap pint ya know that's bad but it was well worth the trip though. It was a great kinda cold... where you can see the fog from your breath but you don't actually FEEL cold.

I used to have a personal decency limit on 0,5 litre beer shouldn't cost over 50 kr. It hurts a little every time I buy a beer at a bar and dont get at least a 50 bill back on on a 100. With inflation and all, that happens more and more often, or else they cheat and serve 0,4 glasses. But if you paid above 60 for a beer, then you can rest assured you were ripped off.
Norway is an expensive country. Enter on your own (bank account's) peril.

Hi there Dan
I was lurking through the thread and got curious about one thing: Is Norway an UE member? If the answer's yes it has an arrangement similar to the UK, which did not addopt the Euro as official currency?
Another question, is Norway part of the Schengen zone?
If I'm extremely lucky I might go to Oslo for 6 weeks next year. I "only" have to win one of the few available UNDP/Oslo's Democratic Governance Center scolarships .
My boss is really encouraging me to submit an application, so we'll see...
I stand to be corrected if I am wrong. Norway is not an EU member but it has signed and implemented the Schengen Agreement.
Edit: and good luck with your scholarship!
Thanks for your answer and for your good wishes !!
As Nok said, Norway are not part of the EU. It was voted down in referendums in both 1972 and 1994. Norway are still a member of the EFTA which has arrangements with EU, in addition to several bilateral treaties. So Norway is as good as an EU-member in most respects, but are formally not.
Norway is part of the Schengen zone, and generally norwegians dont need work permits for working in EU-countries and vice versa. Which means that Norwegian footballers dont count towards the foreigner quota in European leagues.
If you land a scholarship in Norway, you must definitely tell me. I can make a ride over the mountains to visit you in Oslo.
Peace
Dan

Dan, thanks for the thourough answer. I thought you lived in Oslo, are you far away?
Of course I'll let you know if I get the scholarship, I'm gonna need at least a familiar font over there so far away from my beloved developing region (and my husband) . Anyway the courses are scheduled for october-november 2008, and I'll know in june 08 if I got the scholarship.
One more thing, I'm too lazy today to get to the Gazzetta dello Sport. Did Norway qualifiy for the Euro Cup 2008??
I'm in Bergen, which doesnt look far away on a map, but is across the mountains of the Norway interior. 7 hours by train, or 45 minutes by plane.
As for Norway, we had all the chances last saturday at home vs Turkey. A win would have sent us to the Euro, a draw would mean we had to beat Malta in the last game (which we did, 4-1), BUT we lost at home to Turkey 1-2 in a poor performance, which made them go past uus. Turkey then scraped it by winning 1-0 to Bosnia in the final game. The bright side is that I think Norway will get seeded 2nd for the next world cup though, and not 3rd as this time around.
Norway has been so close for the last 3 ones now. Losing the playoff to Spain for Euro 2004, losing the playoff to Czech Rep for WC 2008 after coming 2nd in Italy's group, and now this time, throwing it all away in the 2nd last game against Turkey.

45 minutes plane/ 7 hour train ride is a relatively short trip for Latin America's standards.
Too bad for you guys, hopefully you'll have better luck for SouthA frica. I lost track of the cualifying rounds the minute the referee signaled the final of Italia/ Scotland
Have a great weekend! Gotta finish writing an institutional speech (boooooring task, that's why I'm procrastinating on the Pit )
And, drat, Norway will probably be seeded 3rd for the next world cup too. We currently rank as number 19 in Europe, and 18 would have given us seeding group 2. Curses. Which means we have to beat 2 good teams to get to the world cup.
Peace
