TV-show recommendation: Generation Kill

I have just watched the first 3 of the episodes. It's about a unit of american recon Marines at the beginning of the Iraq invasion. From the creators of "The Wire", they bring with them the same realism and ambiguity into Generation Kill. The soldiers are not glorified, nor are they demonized, and again the focus is on the relation betwen man and the bureucracy. Even if the show is set at the invasion, in the first 3 episodes, there have been minimal "action" in the war-movie sensem, and lots about the guys talking shit with eachother.

If you liked "The Wire" (which I did, I can never watch other cop-shows again), you'll like this one too. A big thumbs up!

Peace
Dan

maybe he's out plugging on their book tour. or maybe he feels that post doesn't credit the black or baltimore population that love the show?

As I said, I can't watch other cop-type shows ever, as they all are laughably superfical and stupid compared to The Wire. Just cruised through season 5 myself, and I wont spoil it for you. But it's the media that gets the focus this time around.

As for Generation Kill, it is equally refreshing in that the characters feel like real people. And, for fans of the Wire, there is a happy reunion with "Ziggy" from season 2, in the role as the never-shuts-up driver in the unit. :)

i read recently that barack obama's favorite show is the wire and his favorite character is omar, which i wouldn't say is the most politically savvy choice. so it made me like him even more. did you like season 5? season 4 has been my favorite so far. is prez in season 5?

maybe generation kill is like the wire in the way that it starts off slowly because of the amount of characters and storylines. it's nice to find another good creative team out there when tv is generally so awful. reminds me of aaron sorkin's glory days.

My fave season is still 2. The dock with all those characters and all those different things brought up in it. The Sabatkas in general, wonderful characters.

I liked season 5. It is a wrap-up season with most (but not all) of the focus on politics and media. Prez makes a show, but that's it. He's not a main character in 5.

As for Omar? He's cool in his way, and a ghetto-style robin hood, with a code and really a soft heart underneath. While he's not engaged in "the game" that is. What's there not to like? :) But compared to the rest of the show, he's also one of the more unrealistic characters, really. Love him though. :)

Generation Kill wont have as much time to build, as it's scheduled for 7 episodes (although over an hour each). But it's more of what they're good at. No excessive drama shit, just telling a story of everyday people in their everyday lives in certain settings. Critical to society, but balanced out nicely.

I'll take my friend up on going through these guys' back catalog.

    Peace
