In less than an hour I am having my oral exam defending my master's thesis in sociology: "Unemployment - a temporary risk, or a step towards lasting marginalization for the individual". So we'll see if I in less than 2 hours can rightfully call myself a sociologist. Fingers crossed! :)

You're saying that a person never fully recovers from unemployment?

No, I'm checking whether those unemployed at one point remain so at another. Alternatively there are a lot of replacement of people in the statistics. My findings indicate that the vast majority get out of unemployment within the first months. even if the same numbers are reported for unemployment at two points in time, it doesn't mean it's the same people. As my findings indicate, even if they are as many in numbers, it is not at all the same individuals. This applies to Norway, of course, as I have only used norwegian data.

As for the result, I got my C and is quite pleased with that. (Mind you, we are a lot stricter with our letter grades than you americans. Perhaps 1 in 30 gets an A) A C is a good grade, which shows that I am competent concerning my subject, and has shown so satisfactorily. As and Bs are for more or less outstanding achievements.

So I am now officially a sociologist! :)

Now to get a job..... :p

So, your conclusion is that unemployment is a temporary risk rather than a step towards lasting marginalization?

  • Congratulations!

I did some Sociology when I studied journalism and yesterday I picked up my (very heavy!) sociology book for the first time in years. I'd forgotten how much I like the subject! The book is pretty good, it's the one by Macionis & Plummer.

Hope you find a job that you like!

    :D

Pretty much. Or rather I find that a smaller group seems to be in a position to be having longer lasting problems, but I have not checked all possible background info such as health history, drug abuse, ethnicity etc. So there may be an explanation behind those too. In short, the benefits are supposed to be temporary and short-term, and I have found that for the vast majority, such is the case.

    Any clearer? :)

Thanks for the kind words people. Much appreciated. :)
As for a job, I may get a temp job doing market surveys and the like, which would be right up my ally, since statistics is what I relly know how to do. So I'm keeping my fingers crossed there. Otherwise, I'm gonna just enjoy being done with it, and having come through in one piece, with the grade I was expecting. As I said, a C in norway isn't a bad grade. I could have done better by spending more time, and going even longer past the original deadline, but my priority was being done with it.

So you may now refer to me as a sociologist. :) I may make a thread next week concerning my findings for you guys to debate. right now, I'm gonna go get myself a beer. :D

Thanks again for all the kind words people!

Well, it wasn't meant as frustration or anything. But when it comes to this I can do the long long explanation of everything, or I can try to boil it down to a few compact sentences, which is what I tried given the time I had and felt inclined to use. The smiley was to be nice, and to express my general mood. Underlying it I thought that maybe my explanation given wasn't very explanatory. So maybe the smiley was kinda apologetic as well. That's other as valid interpretations of that.

I'll try a short explanation again:
I have tested people that were registred unemployed and eligible for benefits in the time-period 1989-1995 in Norway. Rather than having two different samples at different times, which is pretty usual, I had data which allowed me to check the status of the individuals at different points in time. This emables me to say something about the process for the individuals, rather than just allowing me to say how many at different times.

Now, I found that for the vast majority, they receive benefits for a limited period, 6 months tops, and they go out from my data, presumably because they go back to work. Which means that although the unemployed numbers may be fairly stable, it is not the same people making up those numbers over time. So when it comes to projected long-term problems of unemployment, it is only valid for a much smaller group of the unemployed. And they may have health/drug problems and so on, that I have not tested for.

So my finding shows that most people receiving benefits does so for a limited time only, and the long-term marginalized group that people theorize and express concerns about, may be smaller than feared in the case of Norway.

Now, was that any clearer? :)
