Shouldn't garbage men shut-up and pick up the trash? Would you really want your garbage man to knock on your door and start spouting off his political opinions after he put your trash in the truck?
Where the analogy here fails is that Ed doesn't come to your house and knock on your door.
You go to his house, basically, of your own free will.
everybody wants the most they can possibly get
for the least they could possibly do
Maybe. But really, is this such a big deal? I've never been to a show where ed has talked *that* much about politics or whatever.
It's maybe 30 seconds to set up a song or something. In the span of a two-hour (or more) show, it really isn't that much.
And, a good bit of the time, he's actually kind of fucking funny.
When I went to the Toronto show in 05 he basically did a 5-10 minute rant that he called a poll where it was basically came down to the fact that either you agreed with him about the Iraq war or you were an idiot. Then he did the whole thing where he wore the bush mask. I think most people already knew he hated bush and was against the war. Plus a song could have expressed that opinion so much better then a mumbly speech.
Plus it kind of bugs me that he often takes the attitude that either you agree with him or you are an idiot. Why is there no room for compromise or an understanding between parties?

Well, I will have to take your word for it on the Toronto show. I don't own that one, bootleg-wise.
Based on the several shows I've seen in person, and the many more I have recorded, I'd say your show was the exception, not the rule.

although i lean west of left in politics and have no problems with ed ranting on stage (makes the show more personal - less rehearsed) - i would gladly trade that for the fucking aholes in the crowd that are totally blitzed and yelling stupid shit in the middle of songs to shut up ...
That is sort of how I feel. I mean of course the guy has the right to speak his opinion, but 1) most of the crowd at a PJ show probably already knows his opinions and 2) the messages that he tries to spread in his rants aren't nearly as eloquent as the messages he tries to spread in his song lyrics. Plus most of his opinions on things, at least the ones I have heard, seem pretty standard, it would be much more interesting if he brought something new to the table.
Absolutely. I love the band among other things because it helped me survive the 2004 elections, with covers like Masters of War and lyrics like "tell the captain the boat's not safe we're drowning, turns out he's the one making waves". However, I have never, ever, ever heard anything very profound or insightful coming from Ed talking about politics other than in lyrics. Well, maybe the speech he gave about Conservation International, but that was informative and not preachy/condescending/lookatmeImonthecoolsideofthings.
Having said this, he is not going to shut up, and that's not going to keep me from going to shows. His heart is in the right place
... and the will to show I will always be better than before.
On a different note, that Ed "rant" during Porch at 'Roo happens to be one of my favorite PJ moments, like, of all time.
ughhh why? completely took me out of the song. My friends were getting antsy waiting through the speech, too. and this was right after his pre- No More War speech! jesus, its like he wants to bore the audience to death sometimes. great show anyway.
crappy protest songs like no more? haha. That's one of the best protest songs of all time.
no it aint! its terrible. you can feel the crowd die everytime he played it this tour. Play Masters of War instead. fuck i'd take Bushleaguer over that shitty No More crap.

I don't know. You can just sense the passion in his voice. The urgency. The inspiration.
It made me want to get up and immediately vote for whatever limp-wristed, namby-pamby pseudo-Communist candidate Ed told me to vote for (just kidding).
But it did make me want to do ... something. For the first time in a long time, it reminded me of Ed, circa 1994.

i admit it was one of his better speeches. but after the previous two little political rants, my patience had ran out. I kinda knew what i would be getting into at that show though.
People who are familiar with Eddie Vedder know how politically charged he can be, so yeah. I don't have a problem with it, as I'd rather listen to his rants and discussions than some idiot like Ted Nugent who is much more forceful about his views.

That's exactly the problem. He shows complete disrespect to people who disagree with him.
People keep misjudging the issue here: it has nothing to do with whether or not Ed has the right to free speech or whatever. If he didn't have that right, then he couldn't say anything.
I don't see how freedom of speech has anything to do with showing respect and cordiality to those of differing opinions.
Or should we just assume that we must agree with Ed?
I've never seen anything so transparent as the lemming outlook of leftists. Here they claim they're independent and "progressive," but all they do is ostracize non-PC views and insult the opposition.
Progressive views are doomed by their very nature, because they are inherently ideological with no basis in virtue or natural law.
All I know is that to see, and not to speak, would be the great betrayal.

Then dont go to a show, so simple...it's not likes it's something new. Buy a boot and fast forward. The songs that you like so much come from the same place that makes him "rant".

That is sort of the conclusion I have come to. It is probably not going to stop but my preference would be if you are going to talk, say something interesting or insightful (because the songs already do that), and at the very least don't insult the people who don't agree with you.
That being said, I'd rather hear 1 more song than most of his rants.
But that is up to him, and just because I like his music better than his rants.
...
The thing is...
There wouldn't be any 'One More Songs'. If Ed just shut up and sang... he would leave after the songs were sung. There is not set time requirement for his shows... the rants are fillers.
