THE SITUATION:

I am in Columbus, Ga sitting in my grandfather's study.
My grandfather is in the process of passing from this world as we speak.

THE SETUP:
My grandfather was a life long republican, and a true conservative.
Last time i spoke with him (a month ago), i was showing him some Ron Paul speeches. I told my father that he agreed with my position, as my grandfather had verbally concured with much of Dr. Paul's sentiments. In reference to sound fiscal policy, my dad said, "no you are misrepresenting him. He didn't say that". I said, "grandpa, what did you mean?" He said, "I mean i agree with him. I agree with Milton Freedman. I think it was a big mistake to go off the gold standard. I never did agree with that."

Just setting this up.

From the wall in his study:

My grandfather graduated University of North Carolina, undergraduate bachelor of arts, 1933.

He then got his graduate degree in law from Harvard in 1935.

He was liscenced and admitted to the bar by the New York state Supreme Court to practice law as an attorney in 1939. By the Supreme Court of Georgia in 1948, and then of Florida in 1975.

He has a commemorative plaque from the state of Georgia recognizing 50 years of service to the Georgia bar association for his legal practice.

In short, my grandfather was no dummy!
THE PUNCHLINE:

My mother is going through some photo albums and records books.

She just found a sort of political folder that has, among other things, some of those photo-op pictures that presidents send out to their supporters.

There are two from George W. Bush.
One is from his first term. The other is from his second.

On the front of the second under the photo, the typed enscription reads:
To [my grandfather],
Thank you for your support of the Republican National Committee. Working together,
we will build a better future for every American.
Best Wishes,
George Bush

On the back of the second, she found written the following:

8/24/04
After viewing Fahrenheit 9/11,
"Confidential" Michael Moore, and assuming
only "some" of it is true, I am withdrawing
my support to George W. Bush, President of U.S.,
for President of U.S.

I send your family all kinds of warm thoughts, wishes and vibes through this time of transition. I particularly embrace the spirit of your Grandfather with Peace and Love as he readies himself to embark on his next adventure. It sounds as though he's had a long life and a solid career. :) Peace.

F9/11 was a fairy tale used to make money off a grieving public. if you believe F9/11 was true; you must also believe in ghostbusters.

Come on OLS, the guy even wrote "some" is true. That could be one whole thing. Of which that movie had at least one truth.
You've changed your place in this world!

Honestly, I have never seen Farenheit, so I can not comment.
But like evenflow? said, my grandfather wrote "even if SOME of it is true" ...

    i don't know.
    is SOME of it true?
    i haven't seen it.

    ps- thanks JLew. ;)

when you mix truth with lies; isn't the entire story lies? when you mix in truth to make the lies appear real; is that any better?
on the other hand; doesn't every story from ghostbusters to harry potter contain some truth? the history channel's 9/11 conspiracy show contained a lot of truth yet look how it was received here. the warran report contained mostly truth yet look how many oppose it.

Bottom line: the truth is the truth. Lies are lies.

Then by your logic, just about anything ever written is lies... Do you consider the 9/11 report, the Warren Commission, the Gettysburg Address and Ronald Reagan's remarks at the Brandenburg Gate as lies?

All of those have some misleading statements or half-truths in them, so I guess the entire stories are lies...

  • F911 was 90% if not 100% true. None of it is disputed. Moore would be sued silly for slander if it weren't true.

No law suits yet...actually not a peep from The Bush family regarding it that I've heard of.

Moore just stated the obvious in f911...namely Bush sucks Saudi c-ck for oil deals, and Iraq was a full on screw job.

Pretty obvious. What was there to make up?
Progress is not made by everyone joining some new fad,
and reveling in it's loyalty. It's made by forming coalitions
over specific principles, goals, and policies.

While I don't recall all the facts he talked about in the movie, and I don't recall disputing them, I personally feel Michael Moore distinctly pushes a biased, emotional view. I don't consider it inaccurate, however, I do think it's obvious that he weaves emotion and personal opinion in with the facts. While I also believe the man is an idealist and has the best intentions, I can also understand how some people bristle at his movies, and I very much see why this is.

Often I agree with what he says, but I dislike how he says it. At the same time, "true" is still "true", no matter how it's said.

  • Again, i haven't seen the movie, so i can't comment on the content.

    I just know my grandpa.
    The man was no fool.
You could NOT pull the wool over his eyes.

After more than 50 years practicing law, i think he had a pretty good abiltiy to distinguish between tall tales and truth. In otherwords, his analytic, interpretive comprehension, and critical thinking skills were pretty damn spot on.

If he withdrew his HARDLINE REPUBLICAN support from Bush,
    that is EXTREMELY DAMNING.

    Just a thought.
