Sorry.
I don't browse the porch much anymore.
It's unneccesary. I am who I am, and my love for this band is unflinching. I'd rather be here.
But I came across this in the AT&T thread, and am sorry for having missed it:
So ...
Kat is crazy now too, huh?

Roland,
this sounds like something you or I would write.
This sounds like something either of us would be called loons for writing ... talking about protecting "the system" and "it will be how they want it", or generally sounding like the orwellian nightmare is becoming a reality.
I dunno.
I think it gives good credence to the notion that "we" are not crazy, that the world as we know it is (and has been for longer than we wish to admit) in great peril ...
that freedom may be grinding to a hault, as corporations, the media, and the government join forces to wreak on us the will of the few & the rich ... to subject us to their utter control and financial wet dreams.
this isn't a joke, and it isn't something that only "conspiracy nuts" "babbel incoherently" about.
this is the future we all face, and i'd just like everyone to sit back and reflect on that.

kat wrote:Please, the implications of this are serious. It's not just about Lollapalooza and Ed and Pearl Jam's music and one corporation but it *is* about everyone's ability to hear and read what they want on the internet. There are corporations planning to control everything that's happening online. It won't be like it is now. It will be how they want it to be unless we are watchful and take action. When they arbitrarily control what we can see and hear, how will we know what we don't know?
Do you really trust the folks at the corporations to decide what you see and hear? When they are charging fees for what we now get for free, will we be able to pay for the information? That's one way of controlling access, to make it hard to get the knowledge...and everyone knows that knowledge is power. Whether it's intentional, or a mistake, or bias on someone's part, the result is the same. The SYSTEM has to be protected. We have to be watchful because it's important for us as citizens to protect this and other means of communicating with each other.
Please take a moment to visit the websites mentioned. The more we know, the better. http://www.savetheinternet.com/ has a video about open access and the iPhone and their exclusive contract with AT&T...did you know? You can find additional information and a petition to sign at http://www.futureofmusic.org/rockthenet/index.cfm. If we wait, it could be too late to take action and protect what we have...but together, we can do a lot.
Love,
Kat

Didn't all the decent American presidents warn us about this happening in the past?
Once the politicians, big corporations, legal system, and the media all get together as one voice under one rule....well...that is what one would call tyranny no?
Has there ever been a good tyranny before?
I'm thinking some here would argue yes.
Then I'm also thinking many haven't a clue what I'm talking about...
I love this pic:

regimentation of all human beings by a handful of individual rulers
call this a new (world) order. It is not new and it is not order."Progress is not made by everyone joining some new fad,
and reveling in it's loyalty. It's made by forming coalitions
over specific principles, goals, and policies.

Really ? What's so confusing ? If the corporations are contolling on-line, and you don't like it, then go off-line.
The whole concept of this kind of control depends on a medium like the INternet to be effective.
If you don't like marketting, just ignore it.
MOstly peeps here complain about excessive marketting, but Brain of J-Lo startts a thread saying how much she loves coupons, which is a great example of a corporate marketting tactic.
It's all about choice. Corporate control only works cos people fall for the obvious crap they peddle.

This is the information age, man, and some people are getting a little sweaty under the collar because of it. Information is power, and the web is the most powerful educational tool in the world today. Schools, public libraries, University's, etc. have been under mandate to provide internet services to their students for years. Now, why would you want to access an internet that is not giving you all the information you need...even though they could provide it, but don't, because of some idiotic political allegiance. Or some other agenda. Like World Control. Fuck that.

So, where then do you propose people get their information if they are just supposed to ignore the corporation controlled outlets...which is basically every source of information. People shouldn't have to bend over backwards to find truthful information.
Your kind of blanket statement that you should just ignore something like this comes off as ignorant. You say it is all about choice, but eventually it could come down to the fact that your only choice is coporate backed information sources.0 -

I wish we had some way to initiate an act of "infrastructure reclaimation" ... third world countries do it, why can't we?
lets oust these corporations, install boards of electors that have the interest of the people as their motive and run these companies with those interests in mind, while REINVESTING THE PROFITS in the workers, and the people.
ugh ... that almost sounds socialist, don't it.
i dunno ...
can't we just have a capitalist system which recognizes the preeminent needs of THE PEOPLE as it's primary motivation? why should profits get dumped in the pockets of the wealthy?
any information\links about shit like this would be great.

yep, a great quote, and a great man.
you might enjoy the bio i'm curently reading on his frist 100 days in office, called "The Defining Moment". really interesting insights into what factors drove him to be the man he was and to accomplish what he did."Ladies and gentlemen, the President of the United States, Barack Obama."

I know what you mean. It gets so frustrating at times when you hear of something but you feel so powerless to do anything about it. It's even more infuriating when there are people who don't really care at all or don't see it as a problem.0
