Gov't skeptical of threat against NFL stadiums

    NFL.com wire reports

WASHINGTON (Oct. 18, 2006) -- A web site is claiming that seven NFL football stadiums will be hit with radiological dirty bombs this weekend, but the government expressed doubts about the threat.

The warning, posted Oct. 12, was part of an ongoing Internet conversation titled "New Attack on America Be Afraid." It mentioned NFL stadiums in New York, Miami, Atlanta, Seattle, Houston, Oakland and Cleveland, where games are scheduled for this weekend.

The Homeland Security Department alerted authorities and stadium owners in those cities, as well as the NFL, of the web message but said the threat was being viewed "with strong skepticism." Homeland Security spokesman Russ Knocke said there was no intelligence that indicated such an attack was imminent, and that the alert was "out of an abundance of caution."

"The department strongly encourages the public to continue to go about their plans, including attending events that involve large public gatherings such as football games," Knocke said.

The FBI also expressed doubt about the threat.

The nation's alert level remains at yellow, signaling an elevated risk of an attack. The threat level for airline flights is at orange, a higher level, where it has been since a foiled plot to bomb U.S.-bound commercial jets was revealed on Aug. 10.

I'm thinking that if I wanted to bomb a stadium or seven, I'd have a better chance of pulling it off if I didn't alert the whole world in advance. Obviously a hoax.

"On Sunday, October 22nd, 2006, there will be seven 'dirty' explosive devices detonated in seven different U.S. cities; Miami, New York City, Atlanta, Seattle, Houston, Oakland and Cleveland. The death toll will approach 100,000 from the initial blasts and countless other fatalities will later occur as result from radioactive fallout. The bombs themselves will be delivered via trucks. These trucks will pull up to stadiums hosting NFL games in each respective city. All stadiums to be targeted are open air arenas, excluding Atlanta's Georgia Dome, the only enclosed stadium to be hit. Due to the open air, the radiological fallout will destroy those not killed in the initial explosion. The explosions will be near simultaneous, with the cities specifically chosen in different time zones to allow for multiple attacks at the same time. The 22nd of October will mark the final day of Ramadan as it would fall in Mecca. Al-Qaida will automatically be blamed for the attacks. 'Later, through Al-Jazeera, Osama bin Laden will issue a video message claiming responsibility for what he dubbed "America's Hiroshima.""

I don't think it would be that tragic. The dirty bomb is only theoretical, most people don't believe it would actually do a lot of damage.

  • maybe all of our security will go to those 7 cities and 7 other ones will be hit? why would anyone announce their intentions, unless it is a warning. and 60 minutes said osama has the blessing of the muslim world because he has warned us prior to attacking.

just a different way of looking at it i guess. i think its all BS.

I would agree with everyone, highly unlikely indeed.

That said, there was a specific enough warning right before the 9/11 attacks, so I think it is good that these things are out in the media. Extra eyes and ears keeping watch. That never hurts.

My team will be visiting the colts this weekend. Frankly, living in the DC area, that threat would go through my head as I entered the stadium... but that is the world we live in. I would be more likely to wear a shirt that says "not afraid" or something then I would be to stay home.

F'em. If we change our lifestyle and live in fear they win.

how beneficial that would be for the bush regime.

even the fear alone thats generated helps them out. its the only thing they have going for them, keeping us in fear.

this is an example of how stupid they think we are, they say they will have enhanced security, pat downs, bag checks, ect. soooooo, if i was going to carry a bomb into a football stadium, how would a 7 dollar an hour ticket taker stop me? what is to stop anyone from running past security, into the seats, and detonating a bomb? why would you even bother having a ticket, if i wanted to sneak past security because i didnt have a ticket, they would catch up to me somewhere in the seats and throw me out, but if i had a bomb, it would be kinda too late. why even go into the stadium? why not fill a u-haul with explosives and blow the staduim up like the federal building in oaklahoma city? in most cities the only thing stopping you from going under the stadium is a security guard and a wooden arm that raises if you are a player, or have a pass to park underneath, in the other cities, you can drive right up next to the stadium and detinate a truck full of exposives. why do they first act like there is a threat, and then act as if they could possibly prevent it if there was one? i hate being treated like an idiot.... but i suppose this will scare enough people into voting republican in a couple of weeks, so whatever works i guess.....

"Terrorist" having the material to make 7 dirty bombs? I'm no scientist, but I assume that since it takes countries years to develop nuclear bombs.....it isn't too likely that terrorist acting underground are likely to make radioactive bombs that would kill 100,000....

I think the term dirty bombs refers not only to nuclear, but bio-chemical bombs would could be more redily made...

Not 100% on that, but that has been my understanding.
