Cindy McCain's $300,000 Outfit
by Vanity FairSeptember 4, 2008, 10:29 AM
One of the persistent memes in the Republican line of attack against Barack Obama is the notion that he is an elitist, whereas the G.O.P. represent real working Americans like Levi “F-in’ Redneck” Johnston.

It caught our attention, then, when First Lady Laura Bush and would-be First Lady Cindy McCain took the stage Tuesday night wearing some rather fancy designer clothes. So we asked our fashion department to price out their outfits.

Laura Bush
Oscar de la Renta suit: $2,500
Stuart Weitzman heels: $325
Pearl stud earrings: $600–$1,500
Total: Between $3,425 and $4,325

Cindy McCain
Oscar de la Renta dress: $3,000
Chanel J12 White Ceramic Watch: $4,500
Three-carat diamond earrings: $280,000
Four-strand pearl necklace: $11,000–$25,000
Shoes, designer unknown: $600
Total: Between $299,100 and $313,100

Wow! No wonder McCain has so many houses: his wife has the price of a Scottsdale split-level hanging from her ears.

(All prices except Laura’s shoes and Cindy’s watch are estimates, and the jewelry prices are based on the assumption that the pieces are real.)

  • the jewelers usually loan out the jewelry to the rich & famous & they don't pay for their gowns (just to get their names mentioned as designers). This happens with most celebrities & has for a long time. I'm sure Obama isn't wearing clothes from the Gap.

Lets not forget that Cindy is rich... she does own Hensley and sits on the board of it, Its the third-largest distributor of Anheuser-Busch.

And if she can afford that stuff( even though I am sure its donated or on loan ) she has the money.
Thats a lovely accent you have. New Jersey?

it is not the matter if she can afford it or not, it is just politically stupid. McCain needs to try and reach out and show he knows the people's pain. his wife flaunting their wealth is not a great idea.
Much like when Edwards was slaughtered for his haircut.

this is a pretty lame and irrelevant attack. what's the surprise? that rich people buy nice things? i doubt ted kennedy or hillary clinton are shopping at walmart. neither is george clooney or alec baldwin, the liberal posterboys. this is meaningless. there are plenty of good reasons not to vote for mccain. the clothing styles of his wife and laura bush (what has she got to do with anything?) are not among them. you could just as easily come up with outrageous estimates for any wealthy woman in the public eye, regardless of her political stripe.
    and like that... he's gone.

i will say this once agian. a person can be very rich and buy nice things and not be an elistist. elistist is this idea that you are better than others. you can be poor as dirt and be an elistist.
