it is funny that palin chose today to announce that her 17 year old daughter is knocked up. Any other day, and it would be dominating the cable news channels. Except Fox, who would bury it.

it is funny how the Republicans, and the TV and radio talkers they own are burying this as a private matter. could you imagine if Obama's daughters were 17, and this was one of them?

This would be bigger than Gustav and it being a family matter would be out the window. You'll know this would be the case for sure.

this is a private family matter, yes evidently people would know, but why does she neede to announce it? Of course, since she's now running for VP, everything is on the table, and she will continue to be vetted by the media.

  • instead of salivating at the chance to use some teenage kid to stick it to republicans, you should be following your fearless leader Obama and keep the candidates's children off limits.

its really kinda sickening, but i guess thats the way it goes.

Exactly the point I was trying to make.

Agreed, I'll post his comments here again as I really want to see these type of threads stop!

    http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2008/09/01/obama-palin%E2%80%99s-family-off-limits/
MONROE, Michigan (CNN) – Barack Obama told reporters firmly that families are off-limits in this campaign, reacting to news that Sarah Palin’s 17-year-old daughter is five months pregnant.

“Let me be as clear as possible,” said Obama, “I think people’s families are off-limits and people's children are especially off-limits. This shouldn't be part of our politics. It has no relevance to Gov. Palin’s performance as governor, or her potential performance as a vice president.”

Obama said reporters should “back off these kinds of stories” and noted that he was born to an 18 year-old mother.

“How a family deals with issues and teenage children, that shouldn't be the topic of our politics and I hope that anybody who is supporting me understands that’s off-limits.”

The Illinois senator became aggravated when asked about rumors on liberal blogs speculating that Palin’s fifth child - Trig - is actually her daughter Bristol’s. A Reuters report Monday quotes a senior McCain aide saying that Obama’s name is in some of posts, “in a way that certainly juxtaposes themselves against their 'campaign of change,’”

“I am offended by that statement,” Obama shot back, not letting the reporter finish his question. “There is no evidence at all that any of this involved us.”

“We don’t go after people’s families,” Obama said. “We don’t get them involved in the politics. It’s not appropriate and it’s not relevant. Our people were not involved in any way in this and they will not be. And if I ever thought that there was somebody in my campaign that was involved in something like that, they’d be fired.

Because there were some pretty horrible rumors picking up steam that Palin's four-month old actually belonged to Bristol, and the family was covering it up. Bristol being five months pregnant right now pretty much negates that rumor.

I really don't see the big deal in all this, and to Obama's credit, he doesn't either.

To be honest, it makes me wonder a bit. Obama came out with a pretty stinging rebuttal, making it very clear that this is not the kind of politics his campaign engages in, i.e. keeping it above the belt.

Why the hell is it that Obama did this two hours after the story broke, and McCain has had an entire campaign and still has not said anything about the vicious viral rumors going around about the Obamas, and specifically, Barack?

I think she chose today because the left blogs were attacking her and her family saying that she was the grandma to her newborn all weekend.

At least now its out in the open to the mainstream, but it's been known for months in Alaska.

The point I was trying to make was not about the girl's situation. That in itself is a family matter. What I was getting at was Palin had been asked recently and she denied it, rather than say frankly "yes she is pregnant and i am really happy to be a grandmother".

What's funny about that? It's good strategy.

Do you think the pregnancy status of her daughter is an issue that makes a difference in the election?

It is when the base that you represent preaches abstinence.

But I don't think that Obama should or will go after her daughter.

Can't people have positions on issues due to their life experiences which may or may not include mistakes they or their family have made?
