Cuba kept out of cricket series

Guyana won the inaugural Stanford 20/20 crown
Cuba have been blocked from playing in their first ever international cricket tournament because of a US embargo.
Cuba had been invited to take part in the Stanford 20/20 tournament, which features 20 Caribbean teams.

But the competition is backed by US businessman Allen Stanford, who by law must ask permission to engage in commercial activity with Cuba.

Texan billionaire Stanford said on Tuesday that his application had been denied by the US government.

"We have been anxious to include the entire Caribbean in the Stanford 20/20 Cricket Tournament and I am extremely disappointed that Cuba will not be able to play," he said in a statement.

"Stanford 20/20 is requesting that the denial from the United States Government be reconsidered and we are exploring every option to secure their future participation."

The tournament's second season will take place from 26 January to 24 February, with all games at the Stanford Cricket Ground in Antigua.

St Lucia will face the Cayman Islands in the opening match, with Guyana beginning the defence of their crown on 10 February.

what is really crazy is how would Cuba's participation affect the usa? i could understand if this was some multi-billion dollar trade deal that might affect the embargo but for fuck sake it is cricket! it is sport!! let them play.

This is pathetic. Both the US government and the ridiculous Cuban community here in the states should be ashamed of themselves for still support this ineffective and utterly useless embargo.

Maybe if Cuba was allowed to play...and they won, it would make cuba look good at something and the US doesnt want that? I dunno, like you said, let em play!

  • Keep politicians out of sports!
Progress is not made by everyone joining some new fad,
and reveling in it's loyalty. It's made by forming coalitions
over specific principles, goals, and policies.

yes, I know virtually nothing about cricket. I've tried to watch it, I just don't know what's going on at all.

The point is...I love sports pretty much everything, and I know nothing about Cricket...why the hell does the US Government?

The basics, The batter needs to protect those three sticks standing behind him with his bat, the bowler needs to hit those sticks.

The batter scores runs by hitting the ball away from the sticks and running or if the ball is knocked out of the ground by the batter. more or less.

pretty simple and a great game, I was once a huge baseball fan, that ended the day I started learning cricket.

Also the some fast bowlers reach speeds of around 90-100mph and in cricket you are allowed to bowl at the batters body in order to scare him. If it'll help get him out.

That's cool, that's why I'd like to learn it, even though TV is few and far between here and no one plays, it seems like an awesome sport.

This is ridiculous. Maybe the US is scared that if Cubans take up cricket they'll run out of baseball players.

Love cricket. Its the summer sport in Oz. The 20Twenty version of the game is awesome to watch and will get alot of country into the game. I love all forms of the game though, love playing to.

Replace baseballs strike zone with stumps.
The bowler(pitcher)can take a run up to the crease(mound) but he has to keep his arm straight when delivering the ball. He can bonce the ball as well.It doesn't need to be delivered on the full.
There is no foul zone the Batter can hit it anywhere he wants.
Instead of running the bases the batsmen run back and forth between the wickets to accumulate runs. If the ball makes it the end of the playing surface(to the boundary) its four runs, Over the boundary on the full 6 runs.
You can be bowled(bowler hits the wicket with the ball)
    Caught(on the full like baseball)
LBW (leg before wicket. Umpire judges that if your legs weren't in the way you'd be bowled)
Run Out(when running between wickets a fielder hit the stumps before you make it to the other end)
They are the four main way people get out. They're are a few others as well.

Whoever make the most runs from their 11 batsmen wins

There ya go, clear as mud.
I can't go the library anymore, everyone STINKS!!

Yeah, I wus gonna makae this point. I don;t give a rats arse about cricket actually, but the US is the last bastion of no cricket and has no fricking business interfering here. I think they play more cricket in the Antarctic than the US.
I don't understand this embargo anyhow, seems like cruel and unusual punishment to me.
Maybe if they issued an informative and enlightening statement as to what they are trying to achieve ??
Cricket is like gridiron, a lot of pissing about to achieve very little, to the great enjoymment of many.
Very popular in any country the British ever invaded and left a public service or an army in.
    Music is not a competetion.

Yes, the embargo is absolutely utterly ridiculous and really serves to harm both countries that are so close to each other and could work toegther very easily. It's sad really. A hold over from the cold war pissing and moaning.
