I agree the ice shrinking is disturbing, but polar bears are naturally cannibalistic. I remember watching a special on Discovery or Animal Planet when they mentioned that when a mother was protecting her cubs.

I knew that Polar bear ate their own but I believe the it is now occuring with more frequency.
Maybe they are, but the article doesn't state that and the title is using the one line about cannibalism as the focal point of the article when the article is mainly about shrinking sea ice.

It's journalism. A headline about polar bears eating each other is going to grab more attention than shrinking sea ice.

I totally agree with you. It's bad journalism though. If I pulled something like that in my sports journalism class I would have been called out in front of my class though by my prof.

True....they ain't too picky about what's for dinner.....and if the ice is shrinking, then the frequency would probably increase due to it being that much harder to nab a seal.

You probably would but if you where working at a major media outlet you would be called out by your editor for not doing it. What works for academia doesn't always work in the real world.

polar bears are not canibals by nature ... they do kill other polar bears for territory and reproductive reason however, killing for a food source is not normal ...

My prof was Sal Paolantonio from the Philly Inquirer and ESPN. But the actual author of the story never picks the title out. The copy editor does, but that's a topic for a different thread.

I'm sure Sea World would choose not to list polar bear's cannabalism.
But there is a journal from 1983 way before global warming was conceived and scientists thought we going into an ice age that came out that mentions that polar bears were more susceptible to Trichinella a parasitic roundworm due to cannabalism.

1) I love Sal Paolantonio ... that must have been pretty nifty.
2) ... was going to make that point about the title ... took a jounalism class in high school ... one of the few things I remember.

Yep, he was a real good guy. He was pretty tough and really criticized you for lazy journalism, but it was one of the most rewarding classes I took in college. Plus it was interesting to hear his insights on other sports journalists and how he's much more interested in politics than sports. It's one of the few classes that stood out for me.
