Corporate Sponsorship

I was listening to Opie & Anthony this morning. They had Ozzy on and he was discussing the Ozzfest Tour. He mentioned that the tickets where free this year because the tour has taken on corporate sponsors. Now, to me, this sounds like a great way to show your appreciation for your fans. Just wondering why more bands don't do this?

Why is that. Why is taking on a corporate sponsor for a tour, for the sake of cheaper tickets, considered whoring oneself out. It's not like the Rolling Stones who have corporate sponsors but still charge $200 a ticket. That to me is whoring oneself.
Maybe they were worried no one would come if they charged for it this year.
LOL
Most shows have at least one sponsor, it's definitely isn't a replacement for charging for tickets in 99% of the cases, but more so adds to the marketing budget or whatever.

Then you have advertising to deal with. Any sponser is going to want an return on their investment, and advertising is the key to that. Can you imagine in between sets having Eddie say, "Right after I finish this delightful and refreshing Coca-Cola beverage, we're going to play something old for you..." They would expect that. They would want their artist to pimp their product one way or another. Like they do in NASCAR.

I have been to concerts that have corporate sponsorship and have never once heard the artist pimp the sponsor's product. There are fucking signs everywhere and the sponsors products are the only products for sale, but the band or artists never said one word or even wore any clothing advertising the sponsor.
As for your other point maybe they can offer free tickets to fan club members and significantly reduced prices to the general public. Now I'm not saying pearl jam should do this, their ticket prices are pretty damn good, but just speaking in general it would be beneficial for the fans.
I think there is a difference here though. There have been plenty of tours with corporate sponsorships that helped fund the tour. But this Ozzfest thing will be completely free for fans. That's a HUGE tab for the sponser to take on. I will be interested to see how the sponsers get promoted. Nothing is given for free in the corporate world.
I guess this is how I see it. I think the quality of the experience would be tainted. You watch ABC, CBS...they have commercials. They make okay shows. You watch HBO, which you pay for the right to have no commercials. The quality of the product on HBO tends to be far above the quality of broadcast television. Why? Because HBO doesn't have to kiss sponser ass when writing The Sopranos or The L Word or whatever. Show a boob on network tv and you lose sponsers.
I think the same would go for a band like Pearl Jam. The experience would be tainted somewhat. And the band would look like complete and utter hypocrites given their anti-corporate viewpoints over the years.
I believe that it's always been in the band's rider to have any adverts near the stage removed or covered up.

That is why I want to see exactly how Ozzfest is done... I've worked in box offices for the past 6 years, and free tickets are a logistical nightmare. Plus, they will end up on the secondary market and someone else will be making a profit on your show and your goodwill to the fans.

We have a winner!
Because the bands don't get paid.... hence why Ozzfest is having a hard time finding big name acts this year.

5/23/2011- An utter embarrassment... ticketing failures too many to list.
i heard the lineup for philly... pretty rough crowd, they should fit in well in camden
but i am a believer in changing the system from within. sounds like ozzfest is using these sponsors to a degree, just like the sponsors will use ozzfest. a different tact than pearl jam's way, but interesting nonetheless. i guess it depends on the details, i.e. what the bands must do. but i'm guessing they won't individually have to do anything special. and ultimately, it's about getting people exposed to music that they will enjoy. shit, i'm going to Lolla, and a 3 day pass is costing bout $200. that's a lot of money.
sounds to me (initially) like a win-win.
