I was looking into moving to VT, but it is 4th in amount of grey days per year in the country. If not for the grey I would've considered it. What passion!

Unless... California also secedes. Then, they can bring back the 48 star flag.

Or we can make Puerto Rico a state and then we don't have to change the flag at all.

    Dear Vermont:
It ain't easy to succeed at secession......in other words, secession don't work with this country.

I can't imagine the other 49 states would go to war to keep Vermont in. But if Vermont did secede, I imagine some other states would follow.

Personally, I think the United States is way too big, and should be broken up into smaller regional nation-states. All the states would remain friendly to each other, I'm sure. But each new independent region would have its own culture and govern itself according to that culture. More importantly though, there wouldn't be the behemoth that is Washington D.C. controlling a lot of what goes on in each state.

I was close to moving to Vermont four years ago. I may yet move there, or to Maine, both states I prefer culturally and politically to Massachusetts. Mass is famous for being very socially liberal, but I consider to VT and ME to be more progressive and more laid back. People in Mass tend to be rude. Plus, Greater Boston is too urbanized and congested for me. Western Mass is chill, but doesn't get fair treatment from the state government in Boston. Cape Cod is a nice place to visit but is more or less a retirement community. Still the Boston area is what feels like home to me, and I've seen much worse places to live.

Ever see this ? Its not a political union, but an economic one. Also advocates a northeast power grid, among other things. So maybe Vermont is clandestinely spearheading the Atlantica movement:

An interesting site to check out.

    Secession
That one word evokes many emotions and concepts. To many in the United States it equates to treason and rebellion. This sad fact is a result of ignorance. If a man has the right to vote but is always told that voting is pointless, or worse illegal, and he believes such to be the truth it cannot be said that he truly has such a right.

It has not always been so. The United States was born during a time that secession and self determination were not only observed as inalienable rights but were practiced. Virginia set the example in June of 1776 by declaring her independence from Great Britain. She along with the twelve other colonies jointly declared their independence the following month. These were acts of secession and our Independence Day might rightly be called Secession Day.

The charter of the American Secession Project is simple. We desire to place the concept of secession in the mainstream of political thought. Our intent is to proclaim that secession is a viable and legal right and a practical solution to contemporary problems. Secondly, we desire to build a coalition of groups seeking autonomy and independence within the current United States. Mutual support for the concept of self-determination and secession will eventually benefit all groups seeking freedom.
