So Stephane Dion won the Liberal leadership tonight. He's got great views on the environment and was an incredibly hard working cabinet minister in the 90's working on Canadian unity. Do my fellow Canadians here think he can beat Stephen Harper this spring?

not a chance. Dion is too left-wing, even for this country.
Ignatief would have had a shot.
Dion may win votes in Quebec, but he's got no chance in the west.
Harper's conservatives are a strong party and I think are gaining support
  • I think Dion will win a minority but he actually has to improve in Quebec, he's doing fine in most other places in the country (except Alberta obviously). Time will tell I guess, but I like Dion a lot better than the other Liberal contenders. He's gotta work on the charisma factor though, he's too serious most of the time. By being left wing I think he will pick up a lot of people who may have otherwise voted NDP and kind of 'unite the left'.

Next PM of Canada will probably be another minority, the bloc will control Quebec, the Liberals urban Ontario, the Tories rural Ontario and Alberta, the east coast a mixture and BC a mixture so where probably looking at another minority, all thats to be determined is whether it is Liberal or PC.

As for him being strong on the environment, if any party wants to impress me, then how about a made in Canada solution, some examples, remove all the taxes off items that promote energy conservation, such as, hybrid electric cars, energy star appliances, energy efficient light bulbs, mid and high effiiciency furnances/AC. Offer rebates and no taxes to people to convert thier homes and business's to wind or solar power, and I'm sure there are many other slutions.

We need to remember that we Canadians are not perfect when it comes to the envirement, but China and India are pathetic when it comes to the envirement, we need to solve our enviremental problems with Canadian solutions.

Also since America and Mexico it would'nt hurt to engage them in discussion about the environment.

  • While I am surprised at the choice of Dion and I am ashamed to admit it I don't know that much about him :o I can only hope that he can do for Canada what we so badly need right now ... to be united.

At this point though sadly I would take Bert & Ernie over Herr Harper.

So you would gladly accept a leader taht had an American politician speak as a role model and someone to learn from???

  • Are you saying that Dion is pro American or something??? wtf?? Who gives a fuck that Dean was the guest speaker, it means nothing. Dion's got the most progressiove views on the environment of anyone in this country, barring maybe the green party. Dion will be an incredible leader for this country and Canada will regain its progressive and respected place in the world under his leadership. I can't wait till he kicks Harper out of office.

What's Dion's opinion on Quebec as a nation?
