  • yes...but this is actually the proper forum for said discussion. or does sally filed have some gig planned with pearl jam...or anything at all..to link her to pearl jam, and thus posting on the porch? :p beyond possible censorship...i just don't see why it's still on the porch, and even with that tenuous link....still think it is a better discussion for the MT. just my 2 cents.

btw - i did not watch the emmys, so i really can't say much. i've heard/read some about it......but eh, tis nothing new really now, is it? and while on the one hand i am 100% behimd freedom of speech, using your microphone.....evn for causes i fully agree/believe in...i've never thought an awards telecast the proper forum for sharing personally held beliefs.....find a better forum to get your message out. but hey, that's just me.

yea they could have just beeped the word. but I have mixed feelings about this. while I hate censorship, I dont think the emmys is the right forum to bitch about the war. I dont know.

I think that when you have millions of viewers it's the perfect time to make a statement. Saying "you're only supposed to say 'thank you' " is a form of censorship on itselft. If the networks don't want the winners to say whatever they want, they can just not let them make a speech.

really? so now we should use award shows as a forum to allow everyone to protest? come on. yes, they should stand there and say thank you to for getting an award. its a fucking award show.

maybe she should have been more prepared instead of the babbling junk she came up with and didnt let goddamn slip. I dont think it would have been censored had to she something in a more calm sensible way.

I hardly think it qualifies as a protest! It's not like she chained herself to the microphone and refused to be moved or anything! What she was saying was relevant to the role she won the award for which she nicely tied in with the current situation she finds her country in. As far as "protests" go it was a non event, and as far as being edited for content is was a non event!

I agree. had she spoken more calmly and didnt accidentally swear, this wouldnt have happened.

Well I think it was probably a bit unreasonable to expect her to speak more calmly. It's not like she isn't known for blathering on when she gets an award. It's part of her personality. Just how she is. Actors and celebrities do have a tendency to ramble when they're not scripted and speaking ad lib at highly emotional times. And I'm still struggling with what she said being considered swearing. I truly believe they've drawn more attention to it by editing it than it ever would have got if they'd just let it go to air as it was. Surely goddam can't be that offensive? And I understand that as a fairly religious country goddam could be construed as offensive however as an athiest I find the constant references to god on television pretty irritating but I don't feel the need to have it edited out. I guess it all depends on how pc and sensitive you are. I just think there are way more important things to worry about in this world and certainly things more worthy of attention than this.

I think broadcasting live programs with 2-3 minutes of delay can lead to censorship. Live programs have that quality that allow people to speak their mind freely without being afraid of being cut out of the final version. Having a delay is an open road to censorship.
    Damn janet jackson.

They did censor it because she said "goddamn"- which in some respects is almost sadder. They also dumped out on Ray Romano saying "screwing" in the same show.. also if you watch the news about the Isiah Thomas story, they say "The B-Word" instead of just saying "bitch."

If it was JUST field, i would have considered it political, but since they did the same to romano, i think its just part of the growing overreaction to any word that may be considered offensive.

and the reason i quoted your post... the bleeping. Its very difficult, if not impossible, to "bleep" on a live broadcast. Instead, because they operate on a delay, they "dump out" like 5 seconds of audio that includes the offensive part- almost like someone hit a mute button in the studio.
