How much do you guys pay for high-speed Internet?

Just got my bill from Time Warner. This month, the charge for the internet portion of the bill went up by $10. I guess the cost of gas has increased the cost of delivering internet to my home (ha!).

Now, when I called the misnamed "customer service" to ask what the hell, the lady actually told me, "It goes up $10 every year."

I said, "EVERY year? Are you kidding?"

"yeah, every year."

Me: "So let me get this straight. If I'm still a loyal Time-Warner customer in five years, I will be paying an extra $50."

Her (sounding like David Puddy): "Yeah, that's right."

Me: "That doesn't make sense. Why would Internet go up $10 per year?"

Her (getting annoyed with ME): "Well, things just go up every year."

Now, it's obvious this lady is full of shit. Nobody has a blanket policy of jacking up charges for anything $10 per year (except maybe OPEC). My phone bill doesn't go up $10 per year. Hell, the cable portion of my Time Warner bill doesn't go up $10 per year.

But I feel like canceling my Internet service with Time Warner, and when they ask why, I'll tell them this story and say, "I basically don't think I'll be able to afford $544.95 for Internet in 50 years."

My question to you guys: Who do you use for your ISP? Do you like it? How much does it cost?

Rant over. Thanks for listening.

  • Using Comcast here and they're soaking us because we have Direct TV instead of getting the package through Comcast. Currently paying $65 just for internet.

They know that we don't have a choice because our local phone company does not have internet service in our neighborhood yet.

I have had Time Warner for a year and a half and it has been the same monthly price the entire time. If it goes up by $10, I'll drop it.

Are you sure you didn't just come to the end of an introductory period or something?

I considered that, except it has already gone up once because my introductory period ended. It went from 19.95 to 34.95 about six months ago ... now it's 44.95.

Thing is, if they had rationalized that way, I might have actually fallen for it. But "things just go up every year?" Ha.

I go through Verizon, it's $19.99 a month for dsl. Not quite as fast as my parents' cable internet (through Comcast), but still great. I don't have cable tv and don't bother with a land line (cell phone is enough, don't need another way for people to call me), so I don't qualify for all the Comcast "package deals."

Comcast $42.95, plus I have their cable service.

$186 for Cable, Internet, taxes, HD-DVR units, and cabling according to the bill.

Your new cost is exactly what I've been paying the entire time (minus the introductory offer.

In Australia im paying $59.95 per month, but i get a discount of $20 each month because im on a contract. Not much of a contract tho, coz u can cancel at any time and it doesnt incur a charge.
    Im on broadband ADSL.
I changed last month because i went over my quota and got a $300 bill.

We decided to stick with Verizon for the phone because I heard Comcast's service is fucked up.

Comcast has terrible customer service too. They switched me over about 5 times and then finally hung up on me. The servicewoman (who talked and looked like a man) was 4 hours late to hook up internet service and was at my house until 12 midnight. I had to finish the installation myself. I'm switching as soon as Verizon is in the area.

Jesus Christ that's a great deal.

I'm about to get Comcast for my new place and have pretty much what you have except my internet is a tad slower and I only have HBO and it's $150.
  • Jesus Christ that's a great deal.

I know, that's why I went with it.

It's only if you get the bundle pack though. If I remove one thing the price sky rockets. For instance if I decide that I don't want the phone and just remove that feature, keeping all the rest, it goes up to $186 a month. Don't ask me why; that's just the way it is.

I go through Mediacom and it's about $60 a month for Internet service and TV.

I only have the basic channels (NBC, ABC, CBS and Fox), I don't watch a lot of network TV, I don't care about satellite or cable or 500 channels. I watch DVD's mostly.

That sucks. Cable companies rack up their prices because for the longest time there were the only option available. I work for the of the two big phone companies, I'm just not talking biased here, but you're way better off with ATT or verizon, wether it be DSL, FIOS or U-Verse.

    ATT DSL starts at $15.00

I never understood how the cable guys seem to take so long on their installs. Connecting coaxial to splitters is ape work.

  • I just started on a new customer deal with a regional cable company and I pay $35 for high speed internet and 20 or so cable channels which are mostly only good for cspan and local news. I haven't turned it on once since they hooked it up but it's basically free compared to the internet package without the cable which was close to $30. This is a 6 month deal thing to, though.

w/ this company if you have only 1 service they charge you an extra $10 which was the same price to add basic cable...then there's an extra fee if you have to rent a router or modem and extra computers but it's easy enough to split the cable or add another computer to the network yourself

I have Time Warner and with the package I have, I have digital cable (no premium channels) and high speed internet for like $102 after taxes and crap.

The funny thing is that for months they ran ads saying your bill is the same this month, next month, etc., and how it never changes, and how it's easy to pay because it's exactly the same blah blah blah... They quit running those ads and my bill just went up like $3 a month.

i think? we pay $39.99 a month for verizon fios. i think initially it was $29.99 b/c our area was one of the first to host fios, so they gave this promotional deal....free installation, equipment.....and a year at that price. however, since it's linked with our phone landline, i am not 100% on the price, but i do think i'm probably right. i also LOVE it, best damn thing! :p

I have Time Warner, and have been pay 44.95 (after the six month teaser price of 19.99). They just bumped me up to 46.95.

I did have Bellsouth DSL a couple of years ago, but they were horrible..!! I dumped them, and my land-line, so DSL is not an option for me...
