This is not a good thing at all. His politics are really quite backwards. except that I think he was against the Iraq War. Otherwise, not so good.

    Great.
An unpleasant, beady-eyed little man is going to be the face of France for the next five years.

We'll see what comes of the legislative elections come June.

Instead of crying that a conservative won in France, ask this serious question: "Why was a conservative elected in France?" A lot of people on here like to point to Europe and how progressive a place it is. If all those progressive ideas were working, why did they vote in a conservative?

You know I should update it with a pic of my own. I know this really cool German girl a few doors down from me, I'm sure she'd be up for some political art.

France have for most of the time since the war had right-leaning presidents, actually. Sarkozy was of the same party as Chirac, but a bit more of a polarizing person.

It should be further noted that a european conservative is not the same as an american conservative. Many European conservatives would have felt quite at home in the american democratic party.

and many dems would feel quite at home in Canadas conservative side.

Nevertheless, sarkozy is fairly pro US. significantly. well from what I know of him anyway. But I could be way off. But don't think I am.

I think some of his ideas would make even the democrats grind their teeth.
But it's true that France is shifting more and more to the right, a slow economy with immigration difficulties seems to have that effect. I think this election is a mistake but what really matters is the legislative elections in june, it's the majority in power who vote the laws. And we are well on way to have a powerful social-democrats party. So all may be not that bad in the end.

edit : he his very pro us. check out his speech from sunday night.

i think royal lacked the leadership skills to unite the centre ... basically, the vote came down to where the centrists were going and they rather trust a hard-line right winger then a (what seemed to me to be) disorganized leftist ...
