Monday, Nov. 27, marks the day when the Iraq war becomes longer than the U.S. involvement in World War II. Retired Maj. Gen. Robert Scales notes that he is surprised that the U.S. military has held out this long, considering that it is an all-volunteer service. A veteran of Vietnam, Scales credits the country's sergeants for holding things together.

Of sergeants, Scales says, "They are the soul of our army, the glue that bonds fighting units together. They bring young soldiers along, inure them to the frightfulness they are about to witness, and teach them the practical things that keep them alive in the heat of battle."

Scales says that today's sergeants' willingness to stay in the service contrasts to 1972, when many of the NCOs left the service, dissatisfied with the war in Vietnam.

Iraq vs. Other Conflicts

As of Monday, U.S. troops have been in Iraq for 3 years and 8 months. A comparison to other wars:

The Revolutionary War lasted for 8 years and 2 months.

The American Civil War lasted 4 years, ending on April 9, 1865.

The Spanish-American War began on February 15, 1898, and ended in the same year, on July 17.

World War I lasted 4 years and just under 5 months.

The U.S. role in World War II started in December of 1941; it ended with the Japanese surrender in 1945.

The U.S. involvement in Vietnam lasted well over a decade, until Saigon fell to North Vietnam on April 30, 1975.

When I feel like I want to form an opinion of what should be done about Iraq, ultimately I conclude that as much as I may read about Iraq... I wasn't born there... I haven't spend any time there or anywhere else in the Middle East... and I really have no fucking clue what the best solution is. I can only assume that the people who live there will have to figure that out, which is really shitty because I understand the good will behind "we should clean up the mess we made". But I don't see how holding our troops in Iraq can solve anything. All I know for sure is that Halliburton and a few other companies with connections to the government are making a shitload of money from this war. I personally doubt that they care what happens to the region when they are thru - they obviously don't care about anyone who is over there now. The executives of these companies should be the only Americans forced to work in Iraq to clean up the mess - it's theirs.

Yeah, it was NPR's title. I should have modified it.
  • I thought the war is over. Now we're just being rent-a-cops.

This NPR program kind of supports the belief that WWII was the best goddamned war America ever fought in.

    It probably was.

  • However, the difference between WW2 and the Iraq War is that the Democrats of today have a vested interest in America's defeat.

    How do you figure?

The REAL difference is that WWII was fought on the ground. Iraq is being fought on Capitol Hill...the same way Viet Nam was fought...which is why we got our asses kicked there, too.

If polititians want o fight wars so badly, they should enlist. Otherwise, they should leave the war to the commanders on the ground. THAT is why we've stunk it up in Iraq...a bunch of blue bloods playing Army man with our brothers and sisters.
