Hoy Shit! I feel so bad for the people of the small town of Greensburg, Kansas. The devastation is phenomenal. The town is essentially gone, completely wiped out. Reports state the tornado was measured at roughly one-half of a mile wide.

There were more than 75 tornado touchdowns reported yesterday (5/5) in the Plains states.
Positive thoughts to all effected.

That had to be an F5, or at least an F4. I lived through an F3 - F4 series of tornadoes that laid down about a 60-mile long swath, destroyed one town and did extreme damage to two others along the way. Only one person was killed, a 10-year old kid that was sucked right out of the passenger seat of his father's pick-up truck as they were trying to get out of the way.

I could not even imagine the fear that you must have experienced.
    Again I say, Holy Shit!

I don't think I could ever live in an area prone to them. I would be shittin' a brick any time the sky got dark or the wind picked up.

I thought they said 1/2 mile wide. They must have said a mile and a half wide.

    Damn!

That is like death knocking on the door. It is AMAZING that so many survived. It looks like there was quite a bit of warning that this fucking thing was coming at them.

I hope to God that this government of ours helps them out big time and doesn't fuck up. I know they've said they would, FEMA etc...but let's hope it isn't all bullshit with a few bucks here and there. These people lost their whole friggen' town.

I used to live in Central Nebraska, about 15 years ago.

The warning system was shit then. We'd be running out to our basement/crawlspace and watching the tornado tearing out trees and houses.

I just thank god that the system has gotten better and so many more lives are saved because of it.

I feel so badly for the people of Greensburg, KS...it's devastating.

In reality, you get used to it.

I grew up like that as a kid...hell, I think I spent half my summers in a basement or a bathtub with a mattress over my head.

It's hard to fathom that someone would get used to something like a tornado, but you really do, it just becomes a part of life, like people in Cali get used to the threat of earthquakes and people in Florida get used to hurricanes.

Fort Riley soldiers arrested for looting

    By Steve Brisendine

    The Associated Press
    Waddell Reed

GREENSBURG - Four Fort Riley soldiers and a reserve police officer were arrested for looting cigarettes and alcohol from a store in this tornado-ravaged town, the state adjutant general's office said.

Maj. Gen. Tod Bunting, the state's adjutant general, said the soldiers and reserve police officer had come to assist on their own and were not part of any official detachment.

"These were people who weren't supposed to be there. They said they came down to help on their own," Bunting said.

Sharon Watson, a spokeswoman for the adjutant general's office, said the five were arrested at a Dillon's and were being held at the Pratt County Jail without bond. She said all five were in uniform so police allowed them to come and go freely.

Watson said the officer was from a central Kansas community, but she was not sure which town.

In a separate incident, two people wearing Red Cross jackets who were not members of the Red Cross were arrested Sunday for looting, Watson said, although she did not have any additional details.

The Pratt County Sheriff's Office said it would release information later in the day. Fort Riley did not immediately return a message seeking comment.

talk about kicking people when they're down. what pieces of crap these guys are.

The photos you put up were amazing, it looks like matchsticks just strewn about the place.

To all of you who deal with tornados, more power to you. I guess it's a matter of what we're used to dealing with as we grow older....I have to hand it to you, I seriously think I would have a heart attack if one was in the distance.

and rushlimbo, we'll see what the admin does....this is a working class town, small, blue collar. Let's see how high on the priority list these folks are, of course there will be eyes focused on them after the Katrina fiasco so maybe they'll get the help they deserve.
Funny, when I heard an interview of one of their State Rep's (I believe it was a rep,..anyway..) she mentioned FEMA and my auto-cynic kicked right in.

Within a couple hours, every emergency person within like a four county radius was on the scene, and the situation was pretty much under control. Then FEMA showed up and decided that they were in charge and started kicking the local responders out.
