Your boy david grohl is onto something if you're interested in third parties, you have to change our electoral system...

whining, pissing, and moaning about how the media hates you and how everyone is stupid might make you feel better, but it really has nothing to do with the 2-party system.
And you ask me what I want this year
And I try to make this kind and clear
Just a chance that maybe we'll find better days
Cuz I don't need boxes wrapped in strings
And desire and love and empty things
Just a chance that maybe we'll find better days

I'm for rank choice or runoff voting. San Fransisco has it, and here in WA state Pierce County has it.

"In the past, candidates for Pierce County-wide offices could designate by themselves the party affiliation that would appear by their name on the ballot. But under the “ranked choice” election system that Pierce County voters approved in 2006, political parties now designate their candidates for partisan, county-wide offices. Instead of having a primary, the new system calls for voters to rank up to three choices. If no candidate wins a 50 percent majority, voters’ second and third choices are calculated into the mix until one candidate has a majority."

yep, if you're for third parties, and for representation, PR is the way to go...there are many variations...but one thing i find favorable about PR systems is that people generally feel as though they are represented in govt...i think there is a lack of that in single member plurality districts.

i mean, serioulsy,....i HAVE to vote for john mccain...ugh...enough to gag a maggot.

    No you don't. That's what write-ins are for. :)

that's also what fringe candidates are for...:)

I said this to someone here before...but why cant rick santorum run against denis kusinich? polarization has been demonized...but it's based in principle. if one side screws up, then they are held accountable and voted out of office. then the other side has their turn. I hate this running to the middle crap.

There are more productive ways of engaging in discourse and getting people to listen to what you have to share. Just a thought...

I've already stated that I think instant runoff is an excellent idea, as well.

The media and public ignorance on the issues/candidates ARE a big part of the problem....alongside the huge problem of electoral system. All points should be addressed not just the ones you deem worthy. More people becoming aware and then paying attention to the media bias would naturally lead to a democratic call for change in our electorial system but they need to be aware there is a problem on many fronts that need to be tackled in the first place.

    you're right, this i know :) but I wouldn't be me if i didn't be a jackass :)

but you think the media is biased towards the right, and i think it's biased towards the left...it's a matter of perspective. a matter of opinion. there is empirical evidence that demonstrates PR systems lead to multi-party systems, that's all i'm saying.

I don't view the public as ignorant...i view everone as inspired to do what it is they ought to do...it's human nature, they aren't ignorant. this is the idea i was speaking to. I'm just saying the pr system, rather than a lack of intellect among the American people, would allow them a more diverse set of choices.

Ignorance is not a lack of intellect really but rather a lack of understanding and knowledge about what's actually going on.

And I think the media is biased towards mainstream candidates. I didn't say anything about right or left on this issue. The mainstreamers all 3 hold the same views on many issues anyway.

but your own point of view shapes your view of other people's ignorance.

Barack Obama (your fave , i know :)) can downplay polarization as much as he wants, and I know the right does the same, but it's disturbing to me that both polarized sides have painted one side as a bunch of America hating, terrorist loving, stalinists and the other as a bunch of racist, heyseed hillybilly, gay hating, war mongers...

our own point of view is defining our own self-awareness which increases our confidence in downplaying the other side as misinformed, or as ignorant...

no matter what side you come from, accusations of misinformation raises eyebrows.

Yeah, I see where you're coming from but people just aren't aware of what's out there. Polls have shown the majority of americans support many of the same ideas and issues Ralph Nader and Dennis Kucinich take on over the more popular candidates but go out and ask the average person what they know of these people and they won't have a clue who they even are most of the time.

That's not based on my point of view.
