I don't know if you guys have heard about the big mobilitations out here in Italy against the project of the enlargement of the US military base in Vicenza. These mobilitations go on since last year, simply because the people of Vicenza do not want to lose their sovereignty. Last december there was a big demonstration in the city, and yesterday our "anti-american" prime minister Prodi (as Berlusconi describes him) said Yes to the enlargement. It's going to be mass protest, yesterday the citizens of Vicenza started with the blocking of the railways and the train station.
It is important to note, besides the troubles given to the citizens of Vicenza, that the last official report of the US Department of Defense stated that Italy spent 366 millions dollars for the maintenance of the US base in Vicenza. The main US bases in Italy are also Aviano, Camp Derby (Pisa), Sigonella and La Maddalena (Sardinia), this one will be dismantled in the next few years thanks to the pressure of the sardinian people.

A massive national demonstration against the Vicenza US base will take palce in Rome next friday.

wow, didn't know this was happening, use to stop by the Vicenza base every once in a while when visiting from my duty station in Landstuhl, Germany.

I think the bases the U S has in other countries is what keeps the U S such a military power, I mean year we have the bomb, best air force, navy, army, marines, but it's that force projected out around the globe in foreign countries that truly gives us power.

probably not a good idea for the future to make enemies of the locals in Italy, those that have over the years been so gracious. You would think with more technology, we could do more with less and not need to expand, but reduce.
