The situation is not over yet and the shooter is still inside the school and has set fires inside. Just happens to be the town i grew up with population about 15 000 and my father and childhood friend work there as cops. Pretty upset, but at least received a text from dad saying he's ok for now. The shooter had posted videos on youtube shooting at a firing range with his hand gun.

(CNN) -- Several people are feared dead after a shooting at a college in southern Finland, state media reported Tuesday.

The shots were reported at a college for home- and institutional-economics in the municipality of Kauhajoki, according to YLE, a Finnish national broadcaster.

Police said the shooter was still inside the building, but did not release additional information.

The incident comes almost a year after another school shooting left nine people, including the gunman, dead in the Finnish town of Tuusala.

Before that shooting, the gunman, 18-year-old student Pekka-Eric Auvinen, posted a video on Web site YouTube titled "Jokela High School Massacre 11/7/2007" -- identifying the date and location of the attack.

Finland enjoys a strong tradition of hunting and has a high proportion of gun ownership, with 2 million firearms owned in a nation of 5 million people.

oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.
  • I heard on the news that they've arrested him.
The situation is still developing as we speak.

    So very, very sad :(

My thoughts are with everyone involved.

  • At the moment, the news is that the gunman turned his gun on himself, but is now in hospital, injured and under arrest.
The mayor of the town is quoted as saying 'there are many injured, and several killed but numbers have yet to be confirmed'.

  • He had been questioned yesterday about the video on youtube where he's at a range shooting his licensed gun, but there wasn't enough to take the gun away from him.

Finland is most sparsely populated country in the EU. There's lot of wild nature and hunting is very popular. That's why the gun ownership is so high.

"The gunmen apparently posted a video of himself on the internet last week firing a gun.

As a result of this, police interviewed him on Monday but did not revoke his licence, the interior minister said. "

not to blame the police or anything.. just amazing how close they came to maybe stopping the guy.. or at least revoking his licence.

    and now 9 dead.

    totally tragic.

  • This is puzzling. All I can think of is that kids never had video game after video game of glorified main characters running around on large screen TV's shooting people in the face as entertainment.
Progress is not made by everyone joining some new fad,
and reveling in it's loyalty. It's made by forming coalitions
over specific principles, goals, and policies.

fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck!!!! :(

I came to work today and this was the fucking first thing my boss told me about!! before that I saw a newspaper headline of a 5-year-old kid throwing one of his friends on the face with a brick.

I hope the shooter doesn't die, he doesn't fucking deserve it!

I don't wonder at all if this starts happening more often in our country... sadly. There's so much emotionally unbalanced people.. especially young people - that haven't received the help/support they need.

    I know. fuck fuck fuck..

remember that one stabbing a while back? where a guy randomly attacked a young girl when she was alone in a baseball court or something? he did that just to get attention and help for his mental issues. fucked up.

Yeah.. that was pretty fucked up.

    Fucking stupid fucks.

SO many innocent lives lost.. and so many people affected by this. Its just really, really, sad. Stuff like this should not happen in our country - but it does - things are not as well as people think, especially considering young people.

  • Unfortunately, I don't think there will ever be an end to massacres like this.

BrotherLoveBone, eMMI, finnannie and all the other Finnish people on here, I'm truly sorry. Words can't express the deep grief an incident like this can cause.

My thoughts are with the family and friends of those involved.
Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...

... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.

    Of course not.

But that things like this have started to happen so frequently here -- its just really NEW, shocking and it makes me wonder.

Yeah its true, 20 years ago things were better. I guess all the shit that has piled up in peoples minds over all these years ( combined with the way life is nowadays = financial problems, envy, superficiality, etc..etc).. is now bursting out - and stuff like this happens. Finns in general just want to keep a tight grip of the image they have in their minds about our fine country - and ignore all the problems, or fix them with cheap band-aids.

Instead of people just killing themselves.. they have started taking others with them.. :(

yes of course it's shocking and really makes you think. what hurts me most when things like this happen is the fact that they happen in schools.. I mean, school is supposed to be a safe place! a place where everyone, every kid can feel respected and cared for and safe.

all these crazy ideologies and shit, where the hell is this world going???

I think you hit the nail on the head with that finnannie.. guess it's the same all over the world though.. :(

In todays paper, a local columnist quoted Eddie (Vedder) regarding the school shootings (in general). The title of the column was "Believe Eddie" and here's a some sort of translation of the last chapter where he quotes Eddie:

"15 years ago Pearl Jam made a song of similar tragedy in United States. The inspiration for this rock classic was given by a boy named Jeremy Wade Delle, who shot himself in front of the class. The bands singer Eddie Vedder afterwards discussed the case with great wisdom.
    - Think about it: you think you revenge on the whole world, but only end up two column news on a local newspaper. Life goes on, but your gone. The best way to revenge is to keep living your life and show everyone what you are capable of.
    Young people, believe Eddie."
...the dreams ain't broken down here now,
    they're walking with a limp
