Oh for a president who will start looking internally vs externally.

This is the same guy who wouldn't apologise in his first 100 days for a US military plane being X number of miles off of thier coast.

This guy who has started a war on two fronts is talking about human rights.

Nice. Nevermind that Americans are responsible for their burgeoning economy.

Do you think it hurts him to be completely full of shit on a daily basis?

IT's not like we HAVE to give china favored nations status and subsequently not trade with say... Cuba.

Seriously, Mr. President. Have an enema and shut the fuck up. Maybe look to our own titanic issues before you start telling our neighbors how to behave.

No one cares about the Olympics anyway.

Sorry, Rant over. Everyone who has a problem with human rights in china has been informed about that for oh several decades. I just have reached another level of annoyance with our lame duck president. Seriously.. Dude, 8 years ago if you wanted to start this crusade I'd hear you out. At this point it rings rather hollow.

Bush wanted to say all this on China's soil, China said NO. Funny considering all those U.S. companies running sweatshops in asian countries, including China. Bush sounds like an idiot condemning China's human rights policies, especially, in light of Gitmo and the U.S. going against the established internationally recognized war crime tribunal and setting up its own war crimes tribunal.

So nobody's denying Chinese human rights violations - just deriding the person commenting on them, correct?

Does the messenger make the message any less true?

Does the degree of human rights violations make one worse than the other? I happen to think that people in glass houses should not throw stones.

I'm not sure whether there are degrees of human rights or not (with the exception for the finality of death).

I do believe that we all live in glass houses to a degree.

I'm mostly annoyed at the time and place more than anything. If the Olympics are in say Washington DC and say France decides to send representives and bring up every grieveance they have with the US while simultaneously giving them favored nation status and maintaining a tremendous trade deficit with us on the last several months of thier presidents power I'd have a huge problem with that too.

He's had 8 years to do this. He's had 8 years to bring up relations and try and solve these issues. So instead of using the global stage to unite and help neighborly relaitons (ie maybe accomplish something instead of grandstanding)... he uses the publicitiy to deride them openly while at the same time the rest of the entire globe is focused on very controversial human rights issues in his own country and his own administration.

That's my issue. The Olympics are supposed to be about peace; unification; and celebrating what's right with the world (yes I know full well the IOC is full of shit and are absolutely corrupt and this never should have been chosen as a venue) Everyone who cares knows China isn't the fairest, noblist country in the world... but neither are we. I'd rather have my President not continue to be an arrogant asshole. Especially when this country is a tremendous reason for the polution and progress in thier country. We have our own problems and on the eve of thier moment to celebrate what is good about thier country we are condemning them. That's flat out rude and distasteful. Other countries offered this one help when we clearly botched the New Orleans situation and he openly thumbed his nose at it. Now when they get their shot at the olympics... we're throwing eggs at them. That's absolutely reprehensible. Duh, China has human rights issues.... so does the United States.

We have too much pride for our own good.

Yeah - I can agree with that. That's why I was pretty angry with the morons who tried to disrupt the torch relays.

There are plenty of times people choose to make statements at big events. Do you oppose those?

  • I have no problem with anyone criticising, condemning or protesting these Olympics.

That Bush has gone over and then spoken like thr true hypocrite he is, bothers me. No one gives a shit what he has to say anyway. I just think it's an insult for those who strive for change when it comes to human rights violations, be that those of the US, China or Israel... or anywhere else.

It depends. I'm not a big fan of Peta latching onto every social event if you catch my drift.

I guess there is an argument for publicity. Like the guys from the golden gate bridge etc. To make the news it's got to be timely but within reason.

Trying to accost torch bearers is decidedly tasteless; rude and immature, hanging a banner or carrying a sign staging a concert etc that says Free Tibet that denotes abuses etc or something peaceful that does not inhibit others ability to go about thier daily lives safely I don't mind.

It's one thing to disagree and it's certainly hard to do that in China openly anyway. I definitely understand protests and the many protests of the IOC and these Olympics.

I just don't understand one leader taking a shot at other leaders duing thier big welcoming the world event when everyone going already knows the score and at the same time the protesting leader... is knee deep in many of the same issues. The guy talking about "democracy" if you will is the same guy that pushed hard for the "patriot" act.

It's like calling your neighbors marital issues out at a public party or church or something.... when you know full well you're in councling yourself. That's just how I saw it.
