Responsibility vs Regulation

Ok so perhaps I left it vague on purpose to leave the discussion open. My thought comes from several Airlines contention that they keep the proper amount of fuel that the FAA requires on board their aircraft in response to many flights including one of my own that run so low on fuel they have to deter to the nearest airport to refuel and then go on to thier destination.

Does this really make much sense? The plane is not stopping in the destination, it's no doubt flying again soon, why not continue to keep the reserve that is no doubt needed to maintain altitude while the airports remain closed due to weather or construction or other issues brought on that do not keep to schedule.

At this point, you have to plan to be at the airport 2 hours ahead to get throught he extra security and what not and then you can just go ahead and expect a delay or not enough staff on hand to fly the plane because they've cut back on staff.... none of which is the fault of the government. All of this has to do with poor planning by Airline management who have been reaping in huge bonuses while providing fairly awful service in the case of Delta and Continental at least. My experiences with Air Tran have been significantly more on time and I'll just leave out AA and United because they are expectedly terrible as well. Ten hour stints on runways parked with no motion.... etc etc. The level of service is awful and blaming gas prices for this is absolutely unacceptable, it has far more to do with poor management than high Jet A prices. If these guys are expecting the government (IE you and me) to bail them out when they screw themselves and to provide them with all the standards they need to run thier business why the hell do they even pay executives?

What do you think. What are your standards... generally mine are fairly low. I'm not the guy getting mad at security screeners or even having to update flight plans for an hour... I've come to expect a 2 hour flight to take 6 or more hours of my time I just find it mildly hilarious that Americans and American companies who espouse to love liberty; freedom; the free market and capitalism do everything they can to destroy competition; force the government to regulate them to operate with any kind of standard all the while cutting costs in the wrong areas like infrastructure and swapping around top jobs while paying large bonuses to executives, board members and or stock holders when they know they are getting out before the bottom drops out.

Should I feel sorry for Delta/United/AA they almost went bankrupt? I don't. They haven't been run responsibly for years and years now.

It's frankly embarassing the amount of dependance our country and it's companies have on the Federal government to get them through any weak economic period. No one aparently ever builds business strategies based on reliability and longevity. I think next time, we should just let them fold. It's not like with an air travel market as large as it is, there won't be entrepreneurers who will step up and do it better. Same as the mortgage industry.

The airline industry is such a clusterfuck of regulation, bad business, and unions that it's hard to be sympathetic to or overly critical of anyone. Honestly, I'm not sure there's one thing you can point to as a major source of their problems.

In the end, what is going to fix the problems with air travel is better technology. And we're a good ways from that.

Well, I keep flailing my arms up and down but it's still just not working.
