What happens to the money after a candidate drops out?

For example, I'm guessing when John Edwards dropped out of the race, he still had some money on hand from fundraising and donations, etc... What happened to that money when he dropped out?

    i think, in many cases, part of a candidates decision to drop out is based on the fact that the money pool is drying up anyway. My gut feeling is, as someone else said, that any money left in the campaign is donated.

  • i thought they just got to keep it for future campaigns. I remember John Kerry being accused of saving campaign money when running for prez to use for future congress elections.

    Not positive, but I'm pretty sure that's illegal.... I know Ron Paul isn't doing it. He has two seperate funds. One for his presidential race and his upcoming congressional re-election seat.
