thanks for playing mitt. if you love america so much, if you are such a big tough man and saviour of the country, why don't you throw in some of your own money and continue the race? put your money where your mouth is and maybe "prevent the surrender to terrorists"....

the bottom line is he got his ass kicked and is taking his ball and going home. he wanted to avoid another humiliating defeat, and did not want to see huckabee legitimately overtake him in the south. he had to get in one last jab at the dems, who would both beat him in the general election. that comment is one of the stupidest things i have ever heard. more of the same crap that so famously comes out of the neocons' mouths.

    What a TOOL.
How is his campaign aiding a surrender to terror? If he possessed character, he'd stay to fight the good fight.
My guess... he was tired of getting nagged by Mrs. Romney for blowing all of that cash to get a Bronze Medal.

Actually McCain's second place in Alabama is more amazing than Fuckabee's win....McCain basically suspended his campaign here back in June...no money to pay his peeps working.....then he runs a close second.....the rising waters of McCain are what is drowning Mitt.

BTW, what presidential candidate is of a religion that was basically at war (guns & shit) with the U.S. Government at one point in history???? Name the former candidate and his religion.

There were several times the Government attacked the Mormons. In Missouri and then Illinois, the US was at war with the Mormons.

Then in 1857, with the country divided over slavery among other things President Buchanan sent the largest assembly of federal troops at the time to Utah to remove Brigham Young from power and declared war on the Mormons in hope of uniting the country. This led to the Mormons slaughtering everyone over the age of 5 on a wagon train crossing Utah en route to California from Arkansas. This wagon train was the Fancher Party and the slaughter is known as the Mountain Meadows Massacre.

I'm reading Under the Banner of Heaven by the same guy who wrote Into the Wild and it's a fascinating book about the history of the Mormon religion.

I believe that there were further instances of violence in the 1870's or there about, where Federal Troops were sent into the Mormon territories.

Harry Turtledove has done a spectacular series of alternate history novels where the South won the Civil War....he started in the 1880's and carried it onto World War II....in this series, the Mormons are always using war between the USA and CSA as an excuse to rebel against the USA and secede from the union...well written stuff.

I'm sure there have been more. I know Mitt's dad ran in 1968 but dropped out because he was against the Vietnam War and lost much of his Republican backing because of this and Nixon got the nomination.

I just googled Mormons who ran for president and got this:

    http://mormonmatters.org/2008/02/05/9-mormons-who-ran-for-president/

So Mitt was the 10th but there have been only a few serious candidates.

I agree this is silly, but I understand (sort of) what he was getting at.

Remember when Hillary refused to get out of the Dem race, even though she was getting pounded like a crack whore at John Holmes' bachelor party?

There was all this hand-wringing from the Dems on how, by staying in and beating up on Obama and airing all his dirty laundry, she was going to end up handing the general election to the Republicans. Surely you all remember this.

What the Mittster is saying here is that he was dropping out of the Republican race to avoid having the same thing happen to McCain. Remember -- this was also at the time when both Dems were both wedded to the concept of an immediate troop withdrawal from Iraq, regardless of the situation on the ground there (or "surrender" depending on your point of view).

So all Mitt is saying is that he was getting out, lest he aid and abet the Dems from winning the White House. He just chose to offer one more dig at the other side of the aisle while he was doing it.
