Funny, I've always thought Dave wrote My Hero about Kurt.

Foo Fighters Blast McCain Use Of 'My Hero'

October 08, 2008 , 3:25 PM ET
Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.
The Foo Fighters have blasted the campaign of Republican presidential candidate John McCain for using the band's song "My Hero" at rallies without its permission.

Previously, Jackson Browne filed suit against the McCain campaign for using his song "Running on Empty" without consent.

"It's frustrating and infuriating that someone who claims to speak for the American people would repeatedly show such little respect for creativity and intellectual property," the band says in a statement. "The saddest thing about this is that 'My Hero' was written as a celebration of the common man and his extraordinary potential. To have it appropriated without our knowledge and used in a manner that perverts the original sentiment of the lyric just tarnishes the song."

    That's funny.

    So for those keeping score.

    Heart
    Jackson Brown
    John Fogerty
    Foo Fighters

Have all requested that McCain stop using their songs.

Hmmm...Sounds like McCain and Palin are going to have to record their own music.

That just gave me a funny thought...

Imagine the two of them up their doing a duet of "Islands in the Stream"

    That would be horrific

Unfortunately, as long as McCain's campaign has the right licensing from RIAA and ASCAP/BMI/SESAC, as much as the Foo Fighters and any other artist might not like their music used by McCain, there's not much they can do about it, except to ask them to stop and hope the McCain camp listens.

So unless the Foos haven't licensed the song, there's not much they can do about it.

I was of the impression that venues and such were buying the licensing fees, that whatever event was taking place in said venue could then use whatever material the building had the rights to use.

Am I totally off base? I haven't looked much into this.

Well, I know Heart was upset with the GOP using Barracuda, but the GOP had obtained licensing fees to use the song. So if the GOP did the same for My Hero there's not much the artist can do.

Heart is donating all the money it makes from the GOP using the song to the Obama campaign so I guess that's pretty much the only protest you can make besides complaining to the media.

I heard that also. This reminds me of when Reagan was using "Born In the USA" during the 1984 campaign.

WTF? McCain and the "hero" thing is just crazy. He's calling himself a "hero"? Maybe he is, I guess that depends on your definition.

To me, it's kind of like when you hear a someone that tells you they are a christian, but they don't act like it. They have to tell you they are because if you looked at them, you would never know by their actions.

    Dear John McCain,

Quit bragging about being a "hero" or a "POW". This election is NOT about you. It's about us.

    Thanks,
    Jenny

    Seriously.

Combine that w/ George Jones singing I Don't Need No Rockin' Chair and you're probably pretty close to McCain's target demographics.

Man, I hope McCain busts out a Pearl Jam song one of these days... Every other artist has kept a cool head and remained fairly professional in telling him to fuck off. Imagine how nuts Eddie would go? I'd love to see it.

Foo Fighters have bad luck with this stuff. George Bush used Times Like These for his campaign in 2004 and they had to tell him off.
