CNN) -- The liberal environmentalist Green Party nominated former Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney as its presidential candidate Saturday.
Cynthia McKinney represented a suburban Atlanta, Georgia, district for six terms as a Democrat.

Cynthia McKinney represented a suburban Atlanta, Georgia, district for six terms as a Democrat.

McKinney, 53, held off three rivals to win the party's nomination during its convention in Chicago, Illinois. She picked journalist and activist Rosa Clemente as her running mate.

Green Party spokeswoman Scott McLarty acknowledged McKinney was a "long shot" for the White House, but said, "Every vote that she gets helps the Green Party."

"The United States needs an alternative party," McLarty said. "The narrow two-party system we have right now has not served us very well."

McKinney represented a suburban district of Atlanta, Georgia, as a Democrat in the U.S. House of Representatives for six terms -- five consecutively.

First elected in 1992, she lost a primary challenge in 2002 after suggesting in a radio interview that members of the Bush administration stood to profit from the war that followed the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on New York and Washington.

In 2004 she ran again and won with a low-key campaign in which she largely avoided controversy. But voters ousted her again in 2006 after she was accused of a physical altercation with a U.S. Capitol Police officer who questioned her after failing to recognize her at a security checkpoint.

The most successful Green Party presidential candidate was consumer advocate Ralph Nader, who drew nearly 3 percent of the vote in 2000. Nader is running again this year, this time as an independent.

Earlier this year, the Libertarian Party nominated McKinney's onetime House colleague, ex-Republican congressman Bob Barr, as its presidential nominee. Barr also represented a district in the Atlanta suburbs during his four terms in Congress.

And McKinney was the "alternative" that they came up with??? Put aside the obvious fact that she was a six term democratic congresswomen (so not much of an alternative to the two party system there), but they came up with Cynthia fucking McKinney as their best candidate???? Hell, the Green Party spokesman in the article would probably be a better candidate.

Hell yes! Our flight was scheduled for 10:59.. now estimated at 4:00AM!
  • Yikes...the third party nominees this year are certainly quite awful. I didn't think anyone could top the Libertarian's nod to Bob Barr, but it looks like the Green Party has set the bar for foolishness even higher.

It is pretty bleak for alternative candidates that are on the ballot this time around. McKinney, Barr, and Nader ...... yuck.

Funny you include Nader with those other two.

I think it's certainly fair to include Nader with the other two. All three are basically cast-aways and/or has-beens.

Thanks. Some people just dont see it that way, which is their right. Too bad I'm not allowed to have a different opinion but that is the sway of this board.

I get so pissed at people who are so self important that everyone is supposed to KNOW them. I will never be able to respect this candidate simply because of how she treated people who did not recognize her.

Hold on, I'll get a big wooden cross shipped out to you. Even a box of some real big nails. Surely you can nail yourself to it. Or do you need help?

    I disagree.

Nadar's accomplishments through out his life and his behavior alone, are miles above those other two. But it's still funny there's people who would lump them all together. Lazy math.

I think you're certainly allowed to have a different opinion! Why would you ever think otherwise?

Personally, I see Nader in the same group as Barr / McKinney, at least in terms of political viability, influence, and appeal. However, if you disagree with that, you certainly have every right to think differently.

You have no right to think or believe anything differently from me. Your only right is to follow my lead and parrot what I think and believe:D

    Repeat after me........

    :D:D

No doubt that was a gross over-reaction by fly, just because I thought it was funny and misguided. I still see the humor in it.

I'm not sure Nader's accomplishments are all that broad and great, but they certainly are more numerous than McKinney's (zero) and are probably more numerous as Barr's (a handful).

"Lumping them all together" can be valid or invalid -- it all depends on what standard you're using. The original poster seemed to be lumping them together in terms of attractiveness as alternative candidates. Since none of these candidates will attract much in terms of votes and none of these candidates resonate much with even moderate fringe voters, I think his or her "lumping" is fair and I'd agree with it.

I should have worded it as "I am not allowed a different opinion on this without the Nader vultures swooping down". I have and will keep my opinion on Nader and certainly do lump him in with Barr and McKinney.

There are a diverse array of opinions on Nader and many are certainly valid. I'd hardly classify his supporters as "vultures" -- they simply believe him to be a good candidate. Others (like yourself and myself) have every right to disagree.

Are you smoking crack? Where have you been? Go check the other Nader threads to see how quiet I like it. As for challenging my opinions -- all you have done is throw lame insults my way... good job !! Attacking me with insults wont change the fact that Nader is a fraud.

As usual you just hang around with no real input other than patting ur Nader buddies on the back. Maybe Nader will run for Taoiseach so you can be relevant around here.
