He's not a great public speaker if it's not planned out, but with that said - take it to the Moving Train, buddy! ;)

Not at his best - and whether jesting or not - I think taking a swipe at Nancy Reagan wasn't nice....

true! sometimes even great minds need space in between thoughts. that's just a habit, not a sign of a lack of intellect.

by contrast, W barely says "um" at all, and look at what a genius HE is.

    i'll take the "ums", thanks.

Exactly, he hesitates when speaking because he is quite articulate and searching for the right words. W just made words up.

  • I'd rather have him take a couple of more seconds to think something out by saying "Uh" than just saying random shit that makes no sense and makes everyone watching him start to drool because they just got dumber.

    Should've just said "Uh"

in the Guinness Book of Records the worlds longest conversation is listed as that of the one between Ed Vedder and Barack Obama as they passed each other in a hallway in a hotel.

"ummmmm, soooo eh, I ehhhhhh justed wanted to say.... ehhhhh... congratulations"

"uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh you're ummmm Eddie Vedder arent you? ummmmmmmm cool"

"uhhhhhh, in the song Lukin I can sing 397 words in around... ahhhhhhh.... 1 minute... ummmm, i guess... but it takes me 11 days to order a.... uhhhhmmmmmmmm a ehhhhhhh dvd from uhhhhh Netflix"

    and so and so forth

  • At least he does not say "nuke- you-ler"..now so many think everyone in Texas is a moron. So far, Obama has not made a moron out of himself.

Strategry, and what other bullshit sniglets have been made up by the Bush administration? BTW you are correct, we are all "stupider" for having listened to it.

He's also got a habit of saying "you know..."

I study English Language and it's made me almost hyper aware of people using 'fillers' in every day conversation.

Exactly and if thats the only thing people can think to criticize Obama for then he's doing pretty darn well.

I don't really mind it. If anything, it shows me that he thinks before speaking (or, as he speaks).

I doubt that we'll be hearing anything about human beings and fish coexisting peacefully together from this president.
  • Off the prompter Obama is about as eloquent as George W. Actually W may have the upper hand because when he's being folksy it's genuine unlike Obama who has to force it.

    Laugh of the day.

Obama would have to be hit in the head with a ballpeen hammer two dozen times to be as ineloquent as George W. Bush.

    exactly.

he IS an excellent speaker, but even he could be way better. in my numerous public-speaking courses, 'fillers' were always looked upon in a negative light. it is far better to have a pause, sans fillers. however, most speakers feel their pauses are much longer/silent than they actually are...so subconsciously fill the dead-air time with ums, ahhs, you knows, etc.
