What is success to you?

I'm interested in knowing how people on here define success.
Mine would be
1. Having people in my life I love,
2. Raising a good kid,
3. Being as close to the person I think I should be as possible,
4. Being compassionate through all the bullshit life throws my way,
5. Helping others.

when it hits you, you feel to pain.
So brutalize me with music.”

Success to me is
1. Being a good father
2. Having a close and loving relationship with my friends and family
3. Having that special someone to come home to and share your life with
4. Making a difference in the world"When one gets in bed with government, one must expect the diseases it spreads." - Ron Paul0 -
1. Raising children who end up being good, caring people
2. Being able to spend as much time as possible with the people who I love
3. Growing old and happy with my wife
3. Financially, being able to provide a safe home, and not having to fear that if something unfortunate happens, that we''ll be out on the street. My whole life

I think being content with what you have is a measure of success.
I agree with pretty much all of those mentioned above. The only people we should try to get even with...
...are those who've helped us.
Right 'round the corner could be bigger than ourselves.0 -
Being able to be financially secure to the point that I don't have to live check to check and I can do some travelling. Having good family and friends. Living long with my wife (and having NO kids). Though only in small ways, leaving the world a bit better than I found it.I cannot come up with a new sig till I get this egg off my face.0

i was thinking about this the other day, and it depressed me. i came to the conclusion that i'm even more pessimistic than i thought. Success, IMO, is primarily measured by one's happiness. i got to thinking, just how happy can one be, regardless of how well one's life seems to be going, knowing that there is a whole world of people who are doing not nearly as well?
To illustrate, if one is in love, married to the woman of his dreams, he should be very happy. Right? But how can he be, knowing that there are billions of people who are lonely and heartbroken? If one lives comfortably, house, car, all his needs are met, he should be happy. Right? But, how can he be knowing that so many in our world are cold and starving? It would seem that to be truly happy one must harden their heart. A hardend heart, however, hardly seems like success, but rather, total failure.
In no way am i trying to pass this off as universal truth. In fact, i think there might be something wrong with me.

Success obviously means having a greener lawn than your neighbour. DUH!
or
Success means living up to your parents' expectations!!!!!
or
Success means winning an argument with your significant other!!!!!!!!
or
Success means having enough time during the workday to scour the PJ forums!!!!

That's the top three for me. No need for me to type it out.0 -

Mexican Fisherman
The American investment banker was at the pier of a small coastal Mexican village when a small boat with just one fisherman docked. Inside the small boat were several large yellow fin tuna. The American complimented the Mexican on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took to catch them.
The Mexican replied, "Only a little while."
The American then asked, "Why didn't you stay out longer and catch more fish?"
The Mexican said, "With this I have more than enough to support my family's needs."
The American then asked, "But what do you do with the rest of your time?"
The Mexican fisherman said, "I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, take siesta with my wife, Maria, stroll into the village each evening where I sip wine and play guitar with my amigos, I have a full and busy life."
The American scoffed, "I am a Harvard MBA and could help you. You should spend more time fishing; and with the proceeds, buy a bigger boat: With the proceeds from the bigger boat you could buy several boats. Eventually you would have a fleet of fishing boats. Instead of selling your catch to a middleman you would sell directly to the processor; eventually opening your own cannery. You would control the product, processing and distribution. You would need to leave this small coastal fishing village and move to Mexico City, then Los Angeles and eventually New York where you will run your ever-expanding enterprise."
The Mexican fisherman asked, "But, how long will this all take?"
To which the American replied, "15 to 20 years."
"But what then?" asked the Mexican.
The American laughed and said that's the best part. "When the time is right you would announce an IPO and sell your company stock to the public and become very rich, you would make millions."
"Millions?...Then what?"
The American said, "Then you would retire. Move to a small coastal fishing village where you would sleep late, fish a little, play with your kids, take siesta with your wife, stroll to the village in the evenings where you could sip wine and play your guitar with your amigos."
