This trial is and will be filled with horrors, it's just starting. The same trials might happen in 10-20 years from now, with Sudanese criminals, but the world need to react, should not happen, ever again, they said... mmm yeah right.

An elderly woman pleaded with Desire Munyaneza during Rwanda's 1994 genocide not to rape her but he responded by telling her "even old women have it," a witness testified at Canada's first war crimes trial on Monday.

The witness, known only as C16 to protect her identity, wrapped up her fifth and final day of testimony by describing how several Rwandan Tutsis sought refuge from Hutu extremists at the local government office.

When asked by defence lawyer Richard Perras if she saw women being raped, the witness said she only saw women being taken away to be raped.

Superior Court Justice Andre Denis then asked, "what makes you believe they were raped?"

"One girl was taken away and when she came back, she was bleeding," the witness said through an interpreter.

"There was even an old woman that Desire took," she said. "She was pleading with him, saying she was an old woman and he said, `Even old women have it'."

Earlier, the witness said she saw Munyaneza loading refugees into buses to take them to a fenced-in compound.

But Perras claimed that this was the first time she has mentioned such a detail to anyone.

The woman is one of 13 witnesses brought from the Central African country to testify against Munyaneza, who was arrested at his Etobicoke, Ont., home in 2005.

So far, there has been no explanation as to why the 40-year-old father of two is being tried in Montreal, since he has opted for an English trial.

He is the first person to be tried under Canada's Crimes Against Humanity and War Crimes Act, and faces seven counts: two of genocide, two of crimes against humanity and three of war crimes.

He allegedly murdered, raped and pillaged during the genocide in which more than 500,000 members of the country's Tutsi ethnic group were systematically slaughtered by Hutus.

how many victims and how many cretins never have their day in court? ... how this person (if guilty) managed to do what he did without somebody stopping him is the saddest thing of all ...
  • Yeah this is only one of the cretins, one of the criminals, how many are they? How many will be arrest? How many stories will we hear about? And how about those we wont hear about? Horrible human feature.

On a lighter note, I didn't know "cretins" was also an english words, i'll have to be carefull when using that words from now on, hehe...

  • All this trial fascinate me, we know it happened, but hearing about these horrors first hand in a local trial, makes everyone hear about the atrocity that has happen in this conflict, and the people's disgust over this trials is definitly showing that we don't want to accept these kind of situation again, of course we only know what is being shown to us , so this trial being held here in Montreal, is showing it all to us.

I hope we could see more about Darfur, more people would show their disgust over this situation and would call for a change. I'm saying Sudan govt. should be held accountable for what's happening in Darfur, and action taken NOW.

Here are the latest, surprising, development about this Rwandan trials, i don't like that he got beaten almost to death in jail, cause he need to be judge, not beaten up, but it shows the population disgust with this genocide, multiple rape, the lack of humanity, grandma being eaten by dogs, family destroyed, peoples surviving saying those who died are lucky, etc.

Rwandan accused of genocide attacked and beaten in Montreal prison cell Canadian Press

MONTREAL (CP) - A Rwandan man on trial for war crimes for his alleged role in that country's 1994 genocide has been attacked and beaten in his Montreal jail cell.

Desire Munyaneza's trial was postponed Thursday after he was attacked Wednesday night.

"Someone attacked him last night and tried to kill him," his lawyer Laurence Cohen, said outside the courtroom where proceedings have halted until at least Monday.

"He was almost killed last night, so he has to be in the proper mental and physical state to stand trial."

Cohen said 40-year-old Munyaneza was severely beaten and taken to hospital bleeding from his eyes and with possible head wounds. He has been transferred to another prison facility in Quebec.

"In jails, people get beaten up. I understand that," Cohen said. "The question is: Given the magnitude of this trial, the seriousness of the charges against Mr. Munyaneza, you would think that the authorities would be cognizant of all those issues."

Munyaneza faces a life sentence on seven charges under Canada's new war crimes act, including genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.

He faces a maximum sentence of life in prison if convicted, to be served in Canada.

The son of a wealthy Rwandan family, Munyaneza came to Canada in 1997 as a refugee and took up residence in Toronto, where he was arrested in 2005.

Munyaneza is accused of taking part in and ordering the rapes and killings during the genocide.

Estimates vary, but between 500,000 and 800,000 people, mainly minority Tutsis, were killed in 100 days of lawlessness.
