VH1 Rock Honors: The Who
(Pauley Pavilion; 12,829 capacity; $300 top)
By STEVEN MIRKIN

A few snippets from the article...

"The Who" show taped at UCLA's Pauley Pavilion Saturday night (and set to be broadcast Thursday), proved what made the Who so special in and probably unexpected way -- of all the bands on the bill, only Pearl Jam came close to the mix of anarchy, emotion and power the Who could summon in their prime."

and...

"Pearl Jam closed out the first half of the show with the best performance of the evening. The most direct descendent of the Who, they played with a confidence missing earlier in the evening. Eddie Vedder might be the only singer working today who can summon Roger Daltrey's combination of power and nuance, as he was able to nail both the submissive "Love Reign O'er Me" (which they recorded for the soundtrack of last year's Adam Sandler/Don Cheadle vehicle, "Reign Over Me") and pugnacious "The Real Me."

The rest was some not so positive stuff about the other performers...

How about Jeff Ament summoning the power of The Ox on "The Real Me." Jeff has some "Thunder Fingers"

That was freaking awesome. I like the guy in the audience with the "Why the hell is this guy videotaping me?" face. LROM is just a flat out amazing song. Few Pearl Jam songs can elicit the energy this song does at a Pearl Jam show.

i really hope they air both pj songs..

they should have just nixed the other bands and had pj play for 45 minutes.

On this tour did they have the 'rain' on the screen?
Take time to see the sky,
    Find shapes in the clouds.
Hear the murmur of the wind
    and touch the cool water.
    Walk softly,
    we are intruders,
    tolerated briefly
    In an infinite universe.

Great clip, great review. Also like the rain visuals.

Tornado10 no they didn't have rain visuals during the tour.

Can't wait for Thursday (its being aired on 7/17 on VH1 I think)

I've said it before and I'll say it again, everyone must see LROM by PJ live. It's truly an exhausting, mind-blowing experience. Note: it's one of my least faves off Quadrophenia, but watching/hearing Ed pour everything into each performance is truly inspiring. It would be like any one of us (if we were equipped with an amazing voice and empowering stage presence) getting to sing our fav PJ song

Great! Can't wait to see it. :D

Senrock, how the hell do you get 31,000 posts and get called "1/2 full"? Surely there is a more appropriate title...perhaps "Hard to Imagine"???

hahaha! Well, I WAS BIG WAVE til i hit 31,000 apparently. I was proud being BIG WAVE cuz i LOVE that song. I was not thrilled about the half full business. I agree with you. Maybe I should be able to choose my song title. We all know what that would be. :D

You will LOVE the performance!!! Im still exxxcited TODAY about being at the show 2 days ago!!!!! :D

sounds like its going to be awesome. Considering that the review even bashed The Who's own performance, PJ's performance mustve been quite something.

what time does it come on Thursday? its on VH1 i presume?
