DEM VOW ALREADY BROKEN: HOUSE SETS 4-DAY WORK WEEK
Sun Jan 07 2007 15:03:38 ET

Democrats ran to expand the work week in the House to 5 days.

But guess how long that lasted?

Not even one week!

"Culture Shock on Capitol Hill: House to Work 5 Days a Week" front-paged the WASHINGTON POST in December.

Majority leader Steny Hoyer said members of the House will be expected in the Capitol for votes each week by 6:30 p.m. Monday and will finish their business about 2 p.m. Friday.

Explained the POST: "Forget the minimum wage. Or outsourcing jobs overseas. The labor issue most on the minds of members of Congress yesterday was their own: They will have to work five days a week starting in January."

But on the morning after the night before, on the first full week of the new congress, Hoyer has pulled back from his vow!

A Hoyer press release obtained by the DRUDGE REPORT boldly declares: "Monday, January 8, 2007: The House is not in session."

100 hours...starting...soon

what a joke of an article, making something out of nothing, the Republicans had congress work week at less than three days, the Dem's moved that forward allowing for more to get done, they probably had to compremise, that's how it should work. This is a plus and it's trying to be spun, another reason the right will continue to fall.

no, this is exactly what is wrong with the democratic party...they say this and that and DON'T DO WHAT THEY SAY THEY WILL DO. stop making this a spin job...and a rep vs. dem thing. it's about the underlying integrity of the people that make up our government. it's pathetic.

As fucked up as Congress has been in the past.. maybe it's a good thing they don't put in a full 40 hour week.
Besides... don't the Conservatives always complain about how Congress doesn't do anything anyway? That's always been my take. So, what does it matter if they do nothing for 5 days, rather than doing nothing for 4 days?

they work 3 days a week, get over 160k a year to do that, and get re-elected without really accomplishing anything...sounds like their employers are the stupid ones... hopefully real changes will be made, but i won't hold my breath.

    agreed.
it also kinda makes me laugh, when people bitch about fed and state employees...who the bulk work 40 hours+ a week, and they complain about them getting 'too much' vacation time, or benefits, etc. meanwhile, you can do just as well if not better in the private sector...and our elected officials get more time off and excellent benefits than ANY lower level state or fed employee, and all are subsidized by our tax dollars. so why don't more bitch about that? seriously, it pisses me off the health benefits in particular that elected officials get with their job, forget pay and vacation, work-week hours......and lower level employees get no where near the comprehensive health coverage, the people who need it more since they earn less...and especially carrying it over into retirement. bit off-topic....but just had to comment. :p

If they are meeting on Monday evening for votes, is there really any point of getting there the first monday? I can't see them having any votes right off the bat without any debate.

Talk about inventing a story out of nothing.

i don't think not voting is the answer. half of the country doesn't vote as it is and i don't think politicians would care if more people stopped voting. it will only keep them in power because the people voting would be voting for them.

5 days gives them more time to dream up justification for their own expansion.

Both parties DO suck. But, I still vote. I don't vote for a candidate becaise of his party affiliations.. I vote for the candidate of my choosing... granted, it is usually a choce between eating shit or crap so I go for the one that I believe will do the LESS damage to my country. That is why I have voted for both Republicans and Democrats in the elections.
I feel that people who vote based upon the 'R' or 'D' next to the candidate's names, like to suck either Elephant Dick or Donkey Dick. I refuse to do either.

I'm not defending the Dems here but it seems that one Democrat pushed for this change and then pulled back. Hardly seems to be a reflection of the whole party. If Republicans are going to judge the entire Democratic party by the actions of one member than the Republicans get to be judged by the actions of one member. Mark Foley anyone.

  • From what they were saying on Tucker Carlson's show on MSNBC, it was actually Republican John Boehner that called Hoyer and requested the house session not begin so that he could go to the National Championship game.

Atleast his priorities are in order...

That's cool... because, come on... it's the Championship.
But, does the Whole house have to shut down just because one guy wants to take in a ballgame? I mean, does your company shutdown for a day when you call in sick (and go to a ball game)? And if it does... what the hell kind of one horse shop do you work at?

I guess instead of himself just looking bad, he had the new boss close the office down... Man, I wish I had that kind of pull at work.

I know... imagine if your work shut down because you're not there. You know what to do? Go in and demand a raise.

Yeah. I don't really care about this issue. The less they do, the better off we are. Federal holidays and gridlock are as close to utopia as we can hope.

But the one pledge I'm looking forward to is Robert Byrd eliminating pork barrel spending. LOL. I don't think the king of pork will be able to keep that pledge, but I'll be happy to say I'm wrong if it happens.

Ya, I agree, but maybe he's so old, and has been there so long that maybe he just decided that he has taken home enough.... either that, or there just isn't anything left in West Virginia that isn't named after him. :)
