Circuit City files for bankruptcy

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Circuit City Stores Inc, the No. 2 U.S. consumer electronics retailer, filed for bankruptcy protection on Monday just a few weeks before the start of the key holiday shopping season, becoming the largest retailer to file under Chapter 11 this year.

Circuit City fell victim to tighter credit terms from vendors and a loss of market share to Best Buy Co, Wal-Mart Stores Inc and other rivals.

Circuit City filed one week after saying it would close 155 stores, or more than one-fifth of its retail base, and eliminate 17 percent of its U.S. workforce. It also said it was considering all options to restructure.

Well, They did it too themselves truth be told.

They were good at one time, then they went with all part time sales people on the floor and gutted salaries. You're never going to keep good sales people if you refuse to pay them. Most people who actually come in the store need quality help.

They should have cut the executive moron who changed that strategy because they've been consistantly going in the toilet for the last year and a half where as Best Buy despite all thier faults is running a much improved operation.

It sucks that Tweeter is also in the toilet because they were one of the only places you could by actually good stuff.

Ultimately CC went too cheap. Their car audio department has become a shell of it's former adequate self.

The same with thier home audio and good luck finding the top level televisions from any manufacturer. If I'm going to buy cheap why not go to walmart or brandsmart?

I tend not to buy at any of those stores, they are still more expensive than buying from Online stores.

Unless you need some help with the products and need advice. Then I guess going to a store like CC or BB is fine.

Or just learn about the product you want to buy yourself.

Why didn't we use tax dollars to buy them out?

Part of Circut City's downfall has been their customer service. In many surveys shoppers have stated that they took their business to other stores, Best Buy for example, because of the superior customer service. I myself have found that to be the case as well in my personal experiences with both retailers.

I guess electronics don't place as high as banks and auto makers.

  • I usually would only ever shop there if I saw something advertised with a great price.

I went there about 6 months ago with my wife who was buying a digital camera for her office. It's the one time there that I had some questions about some models, and after struggling to find someone who wasn't too busy bullshitting with friends or co-workers, the two guys who I did talk too knew less about the cameras then I did.

Best Buy isn't much better, but with a little work, I have had some luck there getting someone who actually knew what he was talking about.

out of all the times i've called the 2 cc stores in my area to ask about something i've only ever spoken to someone ONCE, every other time it just rings and rings

like mrbrain i prefer online retailers, like deepdiscount (it's only been once that i've seen someone else have a cheaper price and that was only a few cents, but then they have no sales tax and free shipping) but compared to best buy circuit city usually had better prices

Exactly, I generally go in the store to check out the merchandise up close and inspect it. I already know more than 99% of salespeople I don't need thier help. I'm either going to buy it that day, be polite and listen to them if they insist on talking to me or just do my research and leave. Eventually over time you can figure out what the cheapest base price will be on the merchandise, then it's just a matter of waiting for the right deal.

Maybe its particular stores, but I have to say, my experience has been the exact opposite. Whenever I go into a Circuit City, the store is dead and commisioned employees pounce on me every chance they get.. Best Buy is non-commision.

It's like that at any retail store. It isn't phone support. I wouldn't expect to get through. The employees are busy helping the customers who are actually there. If you want good phone support too, expect to pay higher prices as they need to budget for more employees.

i like cc's online ordering/pickup at the store....never had a problem unlike best buy the one time i tried it

I was in CC yesterday just buying time to go someplace else and they were selling off everything, a going out of business sale. I thought it was just that store closing but it's the whole franchise, Tower Records 2 years ago who's next?

For sure! Gotta check out the product first, Like Cameras or TVs, check picture quality.

Infact I'm looking to buy a new TV in the next month or two. Costco has some well priced Plasma screens.

Or do I wait and see if CC has some nice discounts? hmmmm, what 2 do. :D

I've always liked Best Buy better anyways, they have a massively larger CD and concert DVD collection.

The whole people out of jobs, economy continuing to tank thing is not that great though.

The Circuit City here is always disorganized and expensive. I think their high prices are one of the things that are affecting them the most.
