At least three people have been arrested in connection with a possible plot to kill U.S. presidential hopeful Barack Obama during his acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention in Denver, according to U.S. media reports.
Local TV station CBS4 reported on its website that one of as many as four people in custody told authorities that the group was "going to shoot Obama from a high vantage point" with a rifle.
The New York Times reported early Tuesday that three people were arrested on firearms and drug charges in what Denver police called an "aggressive" inquiry resulting from a traffic stop on Sunday.
Aurora police Det. Marcus Dudley told reporters that officers found two rifles, one with a scope, in the vehicle, along with walkie-talkies, a bulletproof vest and driver's licences in the names of other people
But Troy Eid, the U.S. attorney for Colorado, said in a statement that authorities were "absolutely confident there is no credible threat to the candidate, the Democratic National Convention, or the people of Colorado.”
The U.S. Secret Service, the FBI and a joint anti-terrorism task force have joined local police in a massive security operation during the four-day convention in Denver, where Obama is poised to become the first African-American candidate to be nominated by a major party.

Just so that Joe and Jane voter wouldn't be scared to vote for him and end up with...Hillary in office.
I wonder how many times people have plotted to assassinate GW or other leaders? I wonder if this will get more press because Obama is black? I wonder if this hurts or helps his chances?
Most of all, I wish idiots like those involved in this plot would just go away.
At least in this case, I don't think that it will get more press because he is black. If some idiots got arrested in Minneapolis on the opening day of the republican convention with threats towards McCain, I'm sure the story would hit the media too.
I'm not saying that some things don't get played up more or less because of his race, but in the convention city, I would think a "plot" against any candidate would get media attention.

Combine that with some extra powerful surveillance of the whole country, and I'd say he's pretty safe.
Were they Canadian?
Probably not. We now know that rifles aren't the Canadians' first weapon of choice.
LOL
Yeah, aren't broken beer bottles and the occasional icicle the most popular Canadian murder weapons?
Well they say you don't make it until you make it in the States. Could've been?
Then again why would a Cdn do that when we have a sitting black Prime Minister.
