An explosion has ripped through the US embassy compound in central Athens, say reports. It is not clear what caused the blast and there is no immediate word on casualties. Witnesses described a loud explosion in the main embassy building.

Glass in neighbouring buildings was shattered.

Police cordoned off all roads around the compound.

Officers at the scene said the embassy sign was damaged.

The embassy is frequently the focal point of demonstrations in the city

ATHENS, Greece (CNN) -- An explosion shook the U.S. Embassy in Athens, Greece, on Friday morning, an embassy staff member told CNN. No injuries were initially reported.

State-run NET television, quoting police, first reported the explosion occurred inside the main embassy building on the third floor, but the network later said police told them the explosion happened outside the building.

The staff member did not give details on the cause, size or scope of the blast, but local media reported it occurred about 5:55 a.m. (10:55 p.m. ET).

Police cordoned off streets around the embassy after the blast, causing a near-standstill of traffic during morning rush hour.

The embassy in Athens was the target of a rocket-propelled grenade attack on February 15, 1996. That attack caused minor damage.

ATHENS, Greece - A rocket was fired at the U.S. Embassy early Friday, striking the front of the building but causing no injuries. A senior police official said the blast was an act of terrorism, raising fears of a resurgence of far-left Greek militant groups

This is an act of terrorism. We don't know where from," Attica Police Chief Asimakis Golfis said. "There was a shell that exploded in the toilets of the building ... It was fired from street level."

It was the first major attack against a U.S. target in more than a decade, following the arrest of members of Greece's far-left November 17 terrorist group. The group was blamed for killing 23 people — including U.S., British and Turkish officials — and dozens of bomb attacks.

In 2003, a special court gave multiple life sentences to November 17's leader, chief assassin and three other members. Lesser sentences were given to 10 others.

November 17 carried out a rocket attack against the U.S. embassy in 1996, causing minor damage and no injuries.

  • Bloody hell. What next? The nicest thing about Greece was that it felt so safe. Nobody felt threatend by anyone when I was there.
It doesn't matter if you're male, female, or confused; black, white, brown, red, green, yellow; gay, lesbian; redneck cop, stoned; ugly; military style, doggy style; fat, rich or poor; vegetarian or cannibal; bum, hippie, virgin; famous or drunk-you're either an asshole or you're not!

Why am I not surprised? When I heard the news they stormed the Iranian embassy, I asked myself which US embassy will be hit next....

Not too sure if it can be called a 'major attack' though.... a small rocket fired from the street... no one hurt, little damage, a bit of a broken window. Actually, the target was the big US plaque on the external wall, but they missed it and the rocket went through the window. The goal was to show that the revolutionary stuggle is still alive and that they could hit a heavily guarded target if they wanted. But an attack, nevertheless. If it is November 17 (as they claimed), they are a tiny radical, leftist Greek terrorist group who is strongly anti-american, anti-capitalist, etc.....

Where do they get their rockets?

More news saying it could be Revolutionary Struggle that was behind the attack. Also, it wasn't really a rocket, just a rocket propelled grenade which was of european manufacture apparently. It would seem that, if you know how, you can get these things off the internet! No huge conspiracy here... just a tiny little group getting on the band wagon and flexing muscle (if any!). Just a bit of a warning....

The reason I asked is because I'm wondering what an anti-capitalist group is doing buying rockets (or rocket-propelled grenades). Seems a bit contradictory is all.

I saw the news about the bombing this morning at 07:00 before i go to work
You can't imagine what kind of a show is taking place on the tv in Greece.
All kind of an experts arguing with each other, about the hit at the U.S. embace ,comfusing the public opinion. We don't know if it was responsible the group of November the 15th - basic members are now in jail-
or some group of people who tried to pull atencion.I still want to believe that Greece is a safe place to be.I hope i don't make a mistake believing that

Probably!!!!! :D:D These new 'urban guerrilla' groups are resurfacing after the 'bigger ones' (which are actually really tiny) were broken (November 17, ELA). Though in the run-up to the olympics in Greece, they have been a bit more active, it hasn't been as it was before with the other two groups (assassinations, deadly bombings..). It is very much a domestic problem in Greece.

Anti-capitalist, but they still have to eat, clothe themselves, shelter themselves, and... arm themselves. I guess they can be 'consumers' for the basics! :D

ATHENS, Greece - An anti-tank rocket slammed into the U.S. Embassy on Friday, causing limited damage and no injuries but reviving fears of a resurgence of far-left Greek militant groups that carried out deadly attacks over three decades.

The shoulder-fired missile narrowly missed a large blue-and-white U.S. seal on the embassy's facade and damaged a third-floor bathroom near the ambassador's office.

U.S. Ambassador Charles Ries called the attack "very serious" and said no warning had been given.

There can be no justification for such a senseless act of violence," he told reporters outside the cordoned-off embassy, which officials closed for the day. "The good news is no one was hurt and (there was) minimal damage."

Greek authorities blamed domestic militant groups that have carried out a bombings against police and government buildings despite a crackdown on terrorism before the Athens Olympics in 2004.

Police are examining the authenticity of two calls claiming responsibility from the group Revolutionary Struggle, which has carried out six bombings since 2003. The shadowy group has criticized the United States in past statements, citing treatment of prisoners at the U.S. military detention center in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

"It is very likely that this is the work of a domestic group," Public Order Minister Vyron Polydoras said. "We believe this effort to revive terrorism is deplorable and will not succeed."

a week earlier, america kills over a hundred innocent people in somalia, storm the iranian consulate and says that it'll increase the amount of troops for it's destruction of iraq. Yet for this they are quick to say "very serious" and "no justification for such a senseless act of violence" and "terrorisim".

US embassy in Athens has always been a "target" of demonstrations and riots and sometimes of minor terrorist acts. The reason behind this is the opposition of Greek people in US foreign politics (I' not using the misguiding word "Anti-Americanism" that others use, because I can ensure you that we as Greeks have nothing against American citizens - only against US foreign npolitics). US foreing politics was the main reason that the country who born Democracy fell on seven dark years of dictatorship back in 1967. Since then, the overwealming majority of Greeks sees US politicaly as an "enemy".

To give you a figure: 95% of Greeks were against the war in Iraq!! (the highest persent in Europe I think). The about same % think G. Bush is an idiot and a threat for the world.

Even today in the news many people were talking about a provokation (conspiracy theory?) so CIA can interfere again in our country. For those who don't know, last year unveiled that several Pakistanies have been kidnapped in Greece by CIA as suspects or potential terrorists. That caused strong reaction from Greeks, as we don't want our country to be an action field for foreign intelligence services.
